Holiday cards

For many years I have selected a half dozen or so of my favorite shots for the prior year and had 4x8 glossy cards made with 4x6 prints, top or end of card, and I scribble a few words on the blank two-inches. The longtime and beloved owner of the photo shop where I've had this excellent work done died suddenly this fall, and plans for his shop -- a mecca for local photographers -- remain uncertain just now. I know that, for this year at least, I can have 4x6 prints made by Google or by Amazon, but the 4x8 option is not there, and I have no idea of the quality of their work. Does anyone know of reliable online services that can produce high quality prints (4x6 and preferably the 4x8) and even with envelopes? Thanks!

Maybe Costco can do that for you.

Consider having a local copy shop print two copies of 4x6 images on standard glossy 8 1/2 x 11” cardstock. Probably cost about a dollar a page. You can cut these down to 4 x 8 yourself, and put a blank area at top or bottom as desired.

If you import your photos into a word processing program you can arrange them on the page with a preprinted greeting. You can even scan your signature and add that image.

Baronial size envelopes are available sending invitations. You should be able to find nice ones to take 1/2 sheets, or folded sheets of paper — 5 1/2 x 8 1/2. While a bit larger than your specifications, 4 x 8 cards would fit inside neatly. Or, to save time in trimming, consider putting your 4 x 6 image and your message on a 5 1/2 x 8 1/2” card; print two to a page at local copy shop; make just one cut per page and get cards a bit larger than last year.

They have the 4x8 option in both press printed (4 or 6 color) and photo paper cards.

For many years I have been making Holiday Cards in 4x8 flat through Vistaprint. Simply get the exact dimensions of their template and make your own design in Photoshop to that size. Front can be glossy, back side is matt but you can put your own photos, size them as you like, add text, ext. I just placed an order on Tuesday and it shipped on Wednesday. I called them and they gave me a code for 50% off.

Vista Print, an online printer that does a great job with any printing project.

I print my holiday cards directly on Strathmore card stock. I am now using an Epson ink tank printer. I shoot and edit the picture, write a poem that goes with the picture using the same color ink that my wife uses to sign the cards with a fountain pen. They are not glossy, but because the stock is so rich, they come out fine. I have been printing my own for about twenty years but making them since the early '70s. Many of my friends and business clients have told me that they frame and keep the cards. Using the eco tank saves hundreds on ink. I print about 500 per year.

I also use Strathmore card stock (7x10", scored, embossed frame on front half with envelopes - stock number 105-680). I print my own 4x6 photos, usually on glossy paper - but use matte or other print paper if more suitable to image and mount them on the front centered on the embossed frame using "disappearing purple glue" various glue sticks available on Amazon. Occasionally, I mount a second photo on the back just above my custom "watermark" identifier label. Then, I print a greeting, message or whatever print on the inside and write in additional notes and mail - less than $1.00 per card not including postage. Red River paper supplies various different photo print papers and scored card stock with envelopes (and instructions for printing directly on them).

Hi, I live in the UK, I do no know the company you mention "Costco" but is it a case that British people think differently to some company names! Now Costco might be the greatest company going and I note on here it gets mentioned a lot as a place to go.
Me I think very very cheap would not touch it with a bargepole. You probably think we have weird named company's as well.

Costco is an extremely reliable "warehouse" store. They sell in larger quantities. The quality of almost everything they sell is excellent. Even their private label brands are usually very good. I have been shopping there for nearly 20 years. I know it seems too good to be true but it is. I am a savvy consumer and Costco is my main place to shop for almost everything. They do not carry all of the different brands though, so I do have to shop occasionally at the supermarket. Also, they are honest and will take almost anything back if you don't like if for a full refund.
