You have a choice of tethering with a USB cable from your camera to your tablet or laptop (5M max distance for passive USB cables) or linking via WiFi. Wireless is slower (but not typically bothersome) and has the advantage of no cords to trip over (which can can bring the camera and/or computer to the floor). Most major manufacturers (Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji to name a few) have an application for image transfer and camera control which can be used either way, and LR has tethering functionality. An alternative for Canon, Nikon, Sony and Fuji if your camera doesn’t have WiFi or you don’t want to use the camera’s battery or need additional range is CamRanger which does both image transfer and complete camera control. There used to be several manufacturers of SD cards with WiFI capability (such as EyeFi), but the range and speed was limited. I’ve tried them and found them to be marginal (and I believe EyeFi is defunct)
If you transfer JPEGs, the speed is very adequate for near immediate view of the shot at the full jpeg resolution, and even raw transfer is not that slow. Give it a try - there is no cost except for the cable (if you go HW tethered) unless you go with The CamRanger solution (which by the way is excellent)

I agree with TriX that what you are describing is essentially tethering. I am starting to explore tethering to an android phone or tablet. There are a number of apps out there that will do this easily. I had to try a few until I found one that worked well with my equipment.

Yes, I went with the CamRanger too. Worked a lot more reliably.
Interesting you using the Fuji app with Canon.
Anything special to do to use that?
I’ll have to borrow my friend’s 5D IV and give it a go.
Sorry, I didn’t phrase that well - I’m using the Canon Connect Ap with my Canon 5D4 and the Fuji Ap with my Fuji X-T2. I haven’t tried either at more than a few feet, and they both work fine for live view, camera control and. Image transfer. My CamRanger is the version 1 and only supports Canon and Nikon, but I do plan to compare it to the 5D4’s WiFi before I get rid of it. The new version 2, which is smaller and cheaper can also support Fuji and Sony I believe.

Hi all.
Is there such a thing as an SD card with an attached cable having a USB plug on the other end? I'm thinking of something for studio work that would allow photographs to be read/displayed by a PC as soon as they are taken/written to the card. I know there are wifi apps for this but if I recall they are slow and do not upload the full resolution image.
TIA
I think your needs would be best served if you use USB to tether the camera to a computer.
You can use a program on your computer to connect directly to the computer with a cable. I am using "Control My Nikon" with my Nikon D300. Works fine. There should be one for Cannon. Search the internet for suggestions.
If you post the link where you found the item in this photo, perhaps it would help find similar items. Clicking on the link you provided only brings up the photo, not the site where the item is named or described. I can understand what you are looking for but cannot find it by trying to guess the name or descriptive terms of the item. Also, from the pic, it appears that with the flat cable, perhaps the memory card door could be closed.
I shoot with Pentax and have used a program called PKTether with intermittent results for quick transfer to a laptop. It did not save the photo to the memory card, only to the computer. However, I recently upgraded to a Penta K70 and PKTether is not supported for or by the K70. I'd truly like to find a program that would allow me to tether it to my laptop. Wifi has to be set up each time I turn on the camera and I have not tried it much yet.
Several years ago I worked for a school photography company that had a program called, Camdex which was developed for the company and supported Canon cameras for tethering and saving the photos to the memory card in the camera.
Ahh.
Here is the ebay link. It looks like it can extend the SC Card with a serial cable but I'm not sure how if the USB cable talks to it or not.

Are you wanting something to use while the SC card is still in the camera? Rather than taking the 3 seconds to remove the SC card and insert into the reader available on most recent computers?

https://ebay.us/Oy4HgZThat’s just “kludgy” and not going to work. Just use the USB cable - so easy - LR has tethering built in - zero cost except a cheap cable. BTW, the data still gets written to the card, just copied to the computer or tablet also.
sure, an adapter that will interface just about any different size card (mine takes 4 different size cards) to usb into the computer. works like a charm...takes both (not at the same time) cards that my Canon 5 mrk 4 uses, and just to make things easier, I have an HDMI cable going from the computer to a hugh TV screen. I easily cull the images from that card (jpgs or raw) before downloading to the computer using the canon provided dpp software... Ed

As I posted previously, I shoot Pentax and have used PKTether, but that program does not support the K70 I now use as a primary camera. Most of the tether programs I have seen do not support Pentax cameras for tethering. Also, my Kx, when connected by cable to my computer, is only recognized as an external drive for transferring photos directly. My K70 when attached to my computer via a USB cable is not recognized at all. Therefore, that route is out for my cameras.
Also I do not have, or use, LR so that would be an extra cost. Then, what if it doesn't work for me? in the long run, a tether program that works for my Pentax (or maybe a cabled SD card) would be much less expensive and more efficient method of seeing immediate results on a laptop. It certainly does improve efficiency and results for portraiture.

That probably depends on your setup. I had my D850 tethered to the latest LR earlier today and all the photos I took ended up in LR but not on the memory card in the camera.

I’ve never been a fan of LR tethering...

No, looking for a method to tether a camera to a computer to have a larger and better image to check the results.

the large tv screen from the computer via HDMI to the screen does that quite well.
