Do we really need focus peaking? I would be interested in other opinions as I am not sure myself.
OK, now what is "focus peaking" ?
It is an aid to manual focus, where the part of the image that is in focus usually changes colour, or is highlighted in some way according to which system is used.

Do you have an image example?

Unfortunately no, as I do not have this feature on my camera. My question was really posed because I am thinking of getting a full frame Nikon. The D800 has focus peaking but the more affordable and lighter D600 does not. I was really wondering whether manually focusing using live view was as accurate as having a focus peaking aid.
I use sometimes with my Nex7 I just needed to get it adjusted as it can overpower the image in the viewfinder. In situations were the auto focus is challenged it is a great aid to focus.

I have the 800 and that's a new one on me - sounds useful. I'll have to check the settings.
The way I'm set when using the viewfinder, the focus block remains black except when I activate the focus then it is briefly red - to call attention to my focal point. And, I've set mine to snap whether I'm in focus or not.
In live view, if in focus the focus block is green, red when out of focus. Not sure but think the movie live view is the same
