Nikon D80 OLDIE!

Yes, I'm a newbie. Joined years ago but never had much time for photography. I'm now retired and am looking to get back into it again. I have a D80 (that I got from my father, who passed) that just started having a issue. When the shutter release button is pressed the only thing that it does is make a light buzzing sound and the mirror appears locked in the up position. I also have a D7100, so if the D80 is toast, no biggie. Just figured I would reach out to see what others say besides "chuck it".

That is a common problem with the D80, it is a split gear on one of the motors in the shutter mechanism.

I'm sure that letmedance above is correct. Just double check that the mirror up feature is not on by chance.

My daughter had a D80. I used it. Not one of Nikon's better cameras, IMHO. Toss it.

Some people have problems with the D80, I have one, it is a great camera, could use all of my Nikon lens, but I only used it for documentary projects, I have better things to do then to show very good photographs, period. My D80 failed and I know your problem, approx. $180 for a new shutter motor if you want to repair, or you can send it to me free and I will pay the repair bill, I had very good results and still do with the D80. Had considered a D90 but then purchased the D7200 which works really well, I'm a documentary photographer not a professional photographer, a big difference.

sniff, just had mine converted for IR with Lifepixel. Never had an issue with it so hoping I won't after spending the money for the conversion

The D80 is worth less than $100 in excellent condition and low shutter count. Besides a new battery, SD card or sensor cleaning be careful about putting a lot of money into it. RIP
