Nashville Skyline denoise in Affinity Photo

Please evaluate the photo for noise reduction. It looks to me like Affinity did an excellent job. Please comment. Also, I see some fringing around some tall buildings. What is that from?

Comments please.

The sky looks smooth but the image has an overall softness. One of the challenges of denoising is to get rid of the noise without losing too much sharpness and small detail. It's hard to evaluate how well that has been achieved with this image without knowing what the starting point was.

If by fringing you mean a thin white line, that is a sharpening artefact. If you're referring to a diffuse brightness surrounding dark objects, that is something that shows up in HDR-processed images a lot. Too much Clarity can cause it when editing single images.

The original file looks great to me. I went in to 200% and it still looked good and sharp. Did you view the download?

Thanks for your reply. I have not done a lot of sharpening-- no need to before now. But my objective to do this as good as my mentor, Jeff Roush from Jackson TN. I do need more practice with this. I tried to use Topaz Denoise AI. But it would never load up and run. So, I deleted it from my computer.

I may go back to Nashville this weekend if the weather cooperates and try again. Next time I'll use my base ISO and do a time exposure. Then, I'll only have to worry about composition and focus.

Thanks again.

I zoomed in when I was looking for the fringing that you mentioned. Large files provide a fair bit of zooming when you click on the image before download so perhaps I was looking closer than I realised. But I still wouldn't describe it as sharp. However, if you're happy having seen the original, that's what counts.

You're welcome. When I have a lot of noise to deal with I apply sharpening to just the edges. That keeps the sharpening away from the noise, plus it strengthens the edges and makes them more resistant to the softening that the denoise will introduce. Our perception of sharpness is mainly edge-oriented so you don't want the denoise to soften the edges too much. Using base ISO sounds like a good idea. If you use a tripod you can use whatever aperture and shutter speed you need. Good luck with the reshoot. It's a nice scene and worth persevering with.

Nice scene Kozan.

I remember when the L&C was the tallest building by far in the Nashville skyline.
