Very astute observation/supposition.

My gaming Lenevo Legion has an 'HD' screen. My previous, now broken, ASUS gamer did too. Both have/had NVIDIA GPUs that support external monitors to 4K.

Are they accurate? For me, laptop portability is more important than pixel perfection. I don't have trouble producing photos for inkjet printing or online digital display.

The advantage to gamers appears to be price. An apple laptop or workstation laptop with equivalent speed and specs can be two or three times more expensive.

I would look at the Acer brand. I use photoshop with a Canon 5DSR(51 mpg) and I have no problems with speed I like Acers HD IPS screen. You should be well below $1000. 8 DDR ram should do it. If you do video you need a high powered machine. If photos you don't need that gaming type of computer. I just bought a $600 Acer and it works well with lightroom and the 50 mpg raw files.

One of the greatest differences to my editing is when I bought a laptop equipped with a hi res - speak 4k display. Hi res displays are also often better color calibrated. Also go for 32 meg of RAM if you going to look for best speed.
Go to Adobe and search for their recommendations on best configs

I've been using Dell for decades for servers, desktops and laptops. Two years ago I strayed and got a Lenovo for my partner because the specs seemed really good, the price was better than Dell's and it was lightweight. That was a mistake I won't make again! The computer repeatedly had problems and while I've also had Dell computers that had problems, they've been relatively easy to correct. Not so with the Lenovo, but most important, Lenovo's customer support sucked big time. Dell's on the other hand, always comes through. Their online support has real experts, and if you need onsite support it's there in 24 hours, assuming you've bought the right level of support.

When talking LapTop screen size, it is in my mind a balance. A big screen is more comfortable (I at home have a 27" Apple) but in a laptop, screen size verses carrying size. That is you choice and it is personal balance.

All the talk about ram and high resolution screen is all correct to a certain extent. You have to ask yourself what are your photos going to be used for? What kind of screen are the end product going to be viewed on. Is it on facebook or some other website. Who and what will the users be using to view your photos. I just bought an Acer $600 laptop. HD IPS screen and 8 DDR RAM. Works well with my Canon 5DSR(51mpg) and Lightroom. Raw files used all the time. Very fast-very little video used. Video needs tons of processing power.

I reread your original input. And not sure you purpose of a laptop. Is it only to travel or for home, or home and travel. Another option is if it is for both, get a reasonable size for travel and add a large screen to hook to it at home. I will say I believe the laptop might be slower that a disk to, depending on your choices.

20 years ago I got so frustrated waiting for my photo software to complete processing my edits I ordered a custom made Windows XP "gaming" system from Puget Systems in Seattle. It processed any editing function I chose to perform instantly. Just a few months ago one component in the computer gave up the ghost and could not be repaired because of its age. So I began to use my 2004 Toshiba Portege X85 laptop for photo editing. It has done the job admirably. The only drawback is I had to give up a few useful programs which can't run on Windows 10. I was able to find Win 10 substitutes that "sort of" work for me. The only program I couldn't replace was a website link checker that processed a local copy of my 13,000+ page website. Trying to check links on a "live" copy takes way too long. Fortunately I had an old Windows XP tablet which I use only for that program. I hope that one doesn't die too!

Two things I learned: 1) buy a name-brand laptop with plenty of memory and processing power, and 2) be prepared for the day when Microsoft retires Win 10 and foists Windows ? upon us. If you are an Apple user, I can't help you.

Hi Sandy,

I have a gaming laptop, I7, 16 gb ram with 8 gb video, dual drives, SSD and HDD. I'd recommend something along those capabilities if you're going to buy a laptop. It's capable of running anything I've tried on it. Gaming laptops don't have any extra features like extra ports, fingerprint readers, etc. So if you like convenience features look for a laptop with them.

Personally I'm trying to move completely away from a laptop or home computer. They're bulky, can be fragile and are difficult to travel with especially if you're already carrying photo gear. I also use my Samsung Note 20 Ultra and find it works great for editing with the Samsung Dex dock and 32 in monitor. Or any monitor or TV. I recently bought a Samsung Tab S7+ and it's very nice for travel editing. It also works with Dex on the monitor. Both devices seem to run all the Creative Cloud products just fine. So far I haven't encountered any problems. I like that both of my Samsung devices link seamlessly to my Canon R5 making it so easy to transfer photos and control my camera. I haven't tried editing RAW images from R5 yet but the largest JPEG images open and save as fast as on my laptop.

If you want to run windows only based software you'll need a different device. A good tablet option for windows is the MS Surface Pro. The I7 with 16 gb ram is about $1300. It also has a docking station available for home use. Several of my coworkers use them for travel, gaming photo editing and have no complaints. It's much lighter and more durable than almost any laptop.

Good luck with your search.

Dell XPS series are excellent. You can get them with less ram , but mine has 32gb of ram, fast i7 or i9 processors and SSD hard drives, and it easily handles all my still and video editing. Easily the equal of much more costly Macs.
