Right answer.

I understand the point of putting the trip on drives but my real issue is my storage is almost maxed out. What can I do when I get home?

I use two 2 TB SSD portable HDs. One as primary and one to get the a duplicate copy of everything. They get reformated when I return home and have everything safely stored.

The simplest solution is get a good external drive for data. The more expensive solution would be to get a 1TB or greater SSD. Many people with laptops use external drives. There are good "tough" external drives available.

I bought a 5 tb portable Seagate hard drive (usb c) from Costco when it was on sale for $85. It's so fast that I use it all the time with my laptop. My wife noticed and wanted one so I got her the same but the sale ended - she loves it as well. No noise or heat.

Once home, unload most of the images stored on your computer to the larger external drives. This backs up your images and frees space on your computer, so it might run a bit faster.

Just some general comments. You should never try to operate your computer with only 15GB left on the main storage (HD or SSD) as you should have at least 20% free just for normal needs when your computer is running. The second piece of advice I can give you is to not store ANYTHING on your internal drive, except OS and Applications. Photos/Images/Data should be stored on something external and well backed-up. Personally, when using my laptop, I use an external SSD Drive which I back-up as often as I can. Many strategies available. Best of luck.

cj, what's wrong with internal drive for photos? I have three internal drives, one for operating system (ssd) and programs that will only install on drive "C", one for programs that will install on other than "C" and data files, and a third drive (P) for my photos which gets backed up each time I do edits, in three places.

This is what I would do. Get an external drive and backup your hard drive. Then replace your hard drive in your MacBook with new hard drive or ssd. I picked an arbitrary drive for a MacBook since I don’t know your specs. https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/S3DAP12RT02/

I second that. I would purchase a 2 TB SSD drive. Plan on using it only for programs and for temporary storage of files if traveling. I do not save any images on my internal drive when traveling. My current MacBook pro has a 2 TB of space and I always keep at least 1 TB free to use as swap space. It also helps to max out the internal RAM on your MacBook.

There is no space in an Apple laptop for the additional drives. Additional internal drives in any situation where there is physical room could be a good idea as long as you don't over tax the power supply. I used to do that when I ran pcs, but with Macs I use external methods. The OP stated he was using a Mac. Best of luck.

The OP was talking about a LapTop. He does not have the option of more than one internal drive so you're off base a bit.

Sorry cj..... You missed my ps.... I was talking desktop by mistake...... Yes, tooth lap top, one has to go with external, as I do.

Any ideas besides getting a new computer?

Ever think of an external drive?
