Update on Camera Consolidation

This was my original ask on camera consolidation:

"I've decided I have too much stuff. I have a nikon D750, which has been my primary camera. My kids were serious athletes, so I have a D500 that I've used for sports and for macro. I still do some sports, but not nearly as much. I'm thinking of selling the 2 and just getting a D850. I've read nothing but good things about the D850. So here's my question, especially for those of you who have used the D850...would the upgrade be worthwhile?"

So, I gave the D850 a try. I'm not that big a person, and I found the 850 just too big for my hands. I also tried out the z7 mirrorless. I liked the smaller size and it is full frame. I haven't taken the plunge yet, but i think I'm going to keep the D500, sell my D750, and get a Z7 with the Ftz adapter. I know that's not really a consolidation, but mirrorless seams seams to be the direction cameras are moving toward. There would be no reason to have all three (even though I'm a firm believer in GAS). So that's where I've settled.

Go for it, Fran! We love it when a plan comes together and has a satisfying outcome. ๐Ÿ‘

I don't have a mirrorless just bought an D780 to stay with a DSLR but that is just my choice. The new second edition of the Z7 is due out this month. I would suggest holding off on the purchase until you see what they improved on it. Even if you decide not to get the new addition, there is a possibility the original Z7 price may go down with the new model out.

Country boy, I was thinking the same thing. Bsed on what I read the new one will have 2nd sd card and some other minor tweaks. I also read somewhre that price may be around $3,900. That will be a non starter for a new one

The Z6 II and Z7 II will be announced on the 14th. They will have dual Expeed processors. That will probably improve autofocus performance. The D5, D500, and D850 are the first Nikons to have a processor dedicated solely to autofocus. That's part of what makes their AF better than any other Nikons. The new Z series cameras could have a dedicated AF processor also. They will also have dual memory card slots and be compatible with vertical grips. I'm going to be considering the Z6 II.

The Z6 II will start shipping in mid-November 2020
The Z7 II will start shipping in January 2021

Fran I think you have made an excellent decision. The D500 is not a D5 however for sports and action it is a reasonable alternative considering cost. I have both the D850 as well as the Z7. I grab the Z7 now 99% of the time. The D850 while being an excellent camera is now just used for studio work which is rare for me. I considered selling it however it was not worth the financial loss I would sustain. The Z 7 I have been extremely happy with and hav owned since it was first available. The native lenses that are available are incredibly sharp 24-70 2.8 for example. Your previous lenses however will work well with the FTZ adapter. You wonโ€™t be disappointed with you choice as the photos are incredibly sharp. You may want to look at the Z7 II and do a cost performance analysis however.

Your moving in the right direction. I own and use the D500, D850 and D5. I also own the Sony a9 and a7rIV. They all have their place.
I use the D850 primarily for portraits with the Nikon 70-200mm FL 2.8 lens.
I use the D500 primarily for birding with the Nikon 200-500.
I use the D5 because I can.
I use the Sony a9 with the new Sony 600 f4, wow, what a combo, for wildlife and birding.
I use the Sony a7rIV with the Sony 200-600 on a spider holster at my waist along with the Sony a9 and 600.
There are advantages and disadvantages to all of these combo's. I use each for what they are good for.
IMHO, there is no equal to the Nikon 70-200 FL.
My Nikon 500 5.6 FL has no equal in the Sony line.
The Sony 600 f4 is two pounds lighter than my old Nikon 600.
The Sony 200-600 is a great range for most wildlife in Florida wetlands.
So my friend, here is my advice, continue to use your D750, D500, and the Nikon Z7. After about a year, then decide what you "want to keep and what you want to throw away", Kenny Rogers would be proud.

Sounds like you have a great set-up with your D750 & D500. My D750 checks all of my boxes, none of the least of which is the built-in flash, which I seldom use, but is immediately there when I need it for fill or full illumination, without fumbling around in a bag, or not having brought along a flash at all. The question I usually ask is, "How long will it take before the "better photos" of the new camera pays for its additional expense?"
