Pretty much any bird feeder and any bird food will provide you with endless shots of squirrels! At least, that's the way it works around here.
Black oil sunflower will attract pretty much anything. Deer, squirrels, raccoons, fox, skunks, and also birds of all types, including turkeys. Deer will step right over corn to get black oil. Even our feral cats will eat it! Peanut butter suet seems to attract the most birds, as well as raccoons that will go to amazing lengths to steal the suet and usually the holder as well.
Larger birds, such as Blue Jays and Cardinals, like peanuts. I used to buy raw, in-the-shell peanuts at the local farm supply.
I rarely used feeders, except for suet. I just spread the seed and peanuts on the ground next to an old apple tree. The fact is, birds are messy eaters and even with feeders a portion of the seeds will end up on the ground and other animals will soon come around. Birds and squirrels will attract raptors. I had hawks circling my yard and making attacks pretty much every day. The apple tree provided shelter from the hawks. Same thing with foxes. They like black oil and just love squirrels. Finally stopped feeding altogether after being attacked by a rabid fox.

Consider the weeds (plants from seeds in spring) and the squirrels that will attack the feeder. Here
In NYC I deal with both problems. I wish you luck with these issues.

Not just squirrels, any seeds dropped on the ground will also attract rats.

Wild Birds Unlimited has one called “The Eliminator.” It truly IS squirrel-proof. We have two and I have never seen a squirrel get any sunflower seeds out. It’s fun to watch them try, yes, but they soon give up. It’s pricey but very effective.

I highly recommend Brome Squirrel proof feeders, they really are squirrel proof and the customer service of the company is beyond compare. I accidentally dropped a plastic sleeve in winter onto concrete and it cracked. I tried to buy a new sleeve and they refused to take my money. I was very clear that it was no fault of the feeder, but all mine. Regardless, they sent the new part for free and then called to make sure I was able to replace it with no issues. You got to love the Canadians!!

They will come ... no matter what kind you buy.
But as someone mentioned earlier...more important for your mission...you don't want the feeder in the images.
Make sure you set up a good looking natural perch(es) with a background in mind...and where the light will be when you shoot the most (morning...late afternoon).
That's where you will get your best images...not at the feeder.

With winter coming on, I thought feeding our local birds would be nice and a great photo opt. I have not shot too many birds in my long addiction to taking photographs. My plan is to mount it on a post right in front of a large window in my house. It is west facing so it is one of those mirror windows, you can see out but not in, it should be a pretty good blind for watching a bird feeder. What is the best type for capturing birds as they feed and what is the best type of food to attract birds?
Thanks in advance for all your input.

Squirrels can climb posts and jump 4 feet straight up and as far as 7 feet horizontally. I finally used a clothes line wire strung between two trees 40 feet apart with the bottom of the feeder 6 feet above ground. That has defeated all the squirrels! I started with a six port feeder, but so many birds arrived, I have switched to a larger, 12 port station with a tray at the bottom. It holds 6 pounds of seed and can accomodate as many as 14 birds at a time. And it is often maxed out with hungry birds!

As far as squirrel proof feeder, lots of luck. In order to attract a wide variety of birds, you will want to provide a variety of seeds, not just sunflower. Costco and Sam's have premixed sacks that are wonderful, and a lot less expensive than the other stores. They come in 40 pound sacks and contain sunflower seeds, millet, peanuts, corn, etc. Stay away from milo, which most other mixed seed packages contain. Only doves eat it, and you don't want to attract them. They will eat you out of house and home, and bully the other birds away.

This PROVES that! NASA engineer built a squirrel-challenging obstacle course. Needless to say, HE was more challenged than the squirrels.

Just a couple of thoughts. If you want quality images, don't shoot thru a window. When you set up your feeders, consider the background. Create perches: dead branches etc. that you can place around the feeder. Capture the birds on the branches, not the feeder. I think we have seen enough pictures of birds on feeders. Optimally, place the feeder in such a position that you can move around it for best morning and afternoon light. If you are quiet and move slowly, the birds will come in, you shouldn't need to be inside nor do you need a blind. Again, just some suggestions. You can get as elaborate as you like. It will be fun!

Technically no however if you buy the right pole with good baffle and place in open area away from trees or really anything a squirrel can jump from you will be in good shape. I have that system and they try all day long and can’t get to the feeders. They eat what falls on the ground which is fine. I have had this system I bought at Wildbirds Unlimited for years and it works. But you are right, they are always trying. Lol

I have the squirrel buster it’s feeder stations are weighed squirrels are to heavy and they’re weight closes the feeding ports. The draw back is they cost $100. You will never stop all the squirrels so I just figure I’m going to lose some feed to them. They and the birds have learned to live together I guess. Squirrels are fun to watc and photograph

When we lived in the Catskills (never crossed paths with Jerry) a bear destroyed our bird feeder. In fact, the state wildlife folks advised against even having a bird feeder during the time of year--now--that bears are fattening up for the winter, or when they get up in the spring. Our bird feeder was hanging from the pergola on the second storey deck up a long flight of stairs.

Droll Yankee makes several squirrel proof feeders that work. They cost but they work and they last. Black oil sunflower is what birds love, don't bother with the other mixes with exotic names that cost more, it's a waste of money and won't draw birds. Black oil is like Rib Eye to all birds.

Please don't put it in front of a mirrored window. We have large mirrored windows and the birds fly into them all the time at full speed, thinking it is trees and sky, and are killed. And our bird feeders are nowhere near them.
