Tell him to consider doing a "slo-mo" vacation and enjoying the sights and the air ....

Thank you Frank for your appreciation. These pictures were taken in late August 4 years ago, we were also there in February this year - sure a difference between the summer and winter views - but great at any time, the set of perpendicular falls is just a beauty to behold! Thanks for looking in - Joe

Same here, I think we are going to make this a frequent stopover on the way to visit our kids and grandkids in London and Switzerland!

In this second part of the Golden Circle route, we see our first waterfall - one of many to come. We also see our first group of Icelandic Horses ("not ponies, please" the Icelanders will say) and as well one of the many "wild" rivers coursing through the country on the often very short route to the ocean - remember that most of the island is covered with mountains and glaciers and the river waters have only a short way to flow to meet their salty counterpart. Just in case you wonder: The "Golden Circle" route is named after Gullfoss, the golden falls.

GULLFOSS is one of Iceland's best-known waterfalls. Its name means "Golden Falls" and it is located near Geysir in the canyon of the Hvita river. A very unusual waterfall, it abruptly plunges in two stages (11 m /36 ft and 21 m / 69 ft) into a 32 m / 105 ft crevice, creating two falls perpendicular to each other. I believe of the hundreds of waterfalls I have seen in my long life, this must be the only one that has this perpendicular setting.

The ICELANDIC HORSE is a breed of horse developed from stock taken to Iceland by Norse settlers in the 9th and 10th centuries. Although the horses are small, at times pony-sized, most registries for these animals refer to it as a horse. Icelandic horses are long-lived and hardy. In their native country they have few diseases; Icelandic law prevents horses from being imported into the country and exported animals are not allowed to return. The Icelandic Horse displays two gaits in addition to the typical walk, trot, and canter/gallop commonly displayed by other breeds. The only breed of horse in Iceland, they are also popular internationally, and sizable populations exist in Europe and North America. The breed is still used for traditional sheepherding work in its native country, as well as for leisure, showing, and racing.

Thank you Dennis, yes that river picture and of course the gullfoss falls are quite spectacular - it is one of the highlights of the one-day Golden Circle tour that many people do out of Reykjavik.

I see that you are tagging along at the beginning of the tour while the rest is up with me at the middle of the tour - it is nice that you follow along, but you might want to consider doing a fast breeze through the earlier parts to catch up and be in synch with the rest of the tour - but it is ok with me if you prefer to do the slow move in the back, just thought I mention it, feeling that it is sort of nicer if the group stays together. Have a great day - Joe
