Bento tripods Not flips tho. Recommended by pros who helped me with my SONY. Bento proved to be stable, and perfectly fine even with my telephoto lens.

I second this recommendation. Also, has one leg that converts to a monopod.

Thanks for your suggestion, Mikee.

I purchased a Innorel tripod a while back and have never regretted it. This tripod has 12 layers of carbon fiber, no center colum, bowl mount, very sturdy. Will support up to 88lbs. I have used it almost daily for months. It's so easy to set up. I've never had an issue with this tripod. It's totally professional, except the price. It will fit your 300.00 budget. Believe me, it will be worth your time to look at this tripod. For sale on Amazon.

Thanks for the suggestion, Cuw.

A couple of comments. Typically the cost of the ball head equals the cost of the tripod. You want a sturdy yet light tripod which reduces the impact of the weight of your gear. These units are typically pricey but they do not physically depreciate. Don’t buy used unless you find something special, I don’t like the ‘toggle-type’ releases as I invariably catch my fingers and it hurts! I specifically chose a tripod which has the screw mechanism,

I would also recommend a carbon fiber tripod. I had an aluminum tripod but now have the Manfrotto 055CX3 carbon fiber tripod. It's lighter and dampens vibration better than aluminum. In tap tests, carbon fiber tripods stop vibrating in a fraction of the time it takes aluminum to stop vibrating. It's going to be a little more than your $300 budget though. Here are two great carbon fiber tripods with lever lock legs:
Manfrotto MT190CXPRO3 carbon fiber tripod ($474)
Manfrotto MT055CXPRO3 carbon fiber tripod ($554)
I would also recommend a carbon fiber tripod. I ha... (show quote)

This is an excellent set of recommendations. I have both a carbon monopod and tripod. I recognize that some have cost limitations but I would want to encourage you to see if you can find a carbon item. Perhaps a used tripod?

Thank you for your reply, Eric. I agree that used would have to be specifically what I want, which I'm still deciding.

Hi, thanks for your reply. Yes, this was an amazing set of recommendations - a real education. I will be making a trip to the mecca of photography, B&H, to touch, try and really make the right decision.
