I've wanted this lens from the moment it was first offered. I figured it would bring the other world (birds and far off objects to me). I was hoping to bring it on an animal photography safari with me. I'm not sure, now. I need to work with heavy duty weights to get this to be easy to carry. I'm not even sure my camera would appreciate having this hanging on a neck strap. I knew that it weighed a bit more than a "standard" zoom lens, but really was surprised how heavy it really is.

The lens itself is beautiful to behold. I know I absolutely must have it on a tripod. I'm not at all reluctant to use one. I've already attached the adapter to the bracket on the lens.

Now I will tell you. Today is a very windy day with showers then sunshine, then downpour, then who knows what. Nothing outside is standing still. I've taken about 20 shots and I think today is not the day to try to nail down this lens.

I would love to know how long it took you to learn how to maximize this lens. I know I will love it once I get the hang of making beautiful distance shots with it, but WOW, I'm overwhelmed by it right now

Bonjour,

It’s probably Nikon’s best value lens for the money. I was finding it a bit heavy for a long hike a so have moved over the the PF options. However, you cannot go far wrong with the 200-500 and you get more flexibility over focal length compared with the primes. That said, you will probably find most of your shots are taken at 500mn

I don't read French, but it's a nice photo.

Steve Perry of Back Country Gallery (and a member here) has books and videos regarding this type photography and he is experienced with the 200-500 (an excellent choice). YouTube him.

I'm a big fan of Steve Perry. I enjoy his books and his work. I know he is very much a Nikon fan. I was just having a bit of buyer's remorse. (seldom happens with me) I was feeling pretty scared of the weight, but I've been working on building my arms and wrists for another reason and can certainly work harder to become just that much stronger.

I am 88 yo. I use the Nikon 200-500 with both my D850 and Z6. I have never had it on a tripod (I do have a Gimble). I have used it mostly for bird photos, especially hummingbirds. They are not the easiest thing in the world to photograph. Covid keeps me in my backyard. All handheld. Be not afraid!

I've got a friend, female, 68 yrs old and 5'2", that hand holds a Sigma Sport 150-600 (6.3 lbs) on a D800.

This is one of her shots. Barring a physical disability, most people should be able to hand hold a lens like a 200-500 which is lighter than the Sigma by 1.25 lbs.

I originally attached my 200-500 to my D7200. Great results right away. With my D500 I started getting BIF and there more difficult shots. I have a RRS TVC-34L tripod with a Wimberly gimbal head. Really helps with the weight. Good luck!

Oh, the shot I attached is from some of the first shots I took with this lens.
Here's one of a Great Blue Heron on the wing. The 200-500 is great lens but does need some effort to get things right. It can test your technique.
