I see that you have been tearing up Apopka and doing a fine job! I'm postponing my usual trip to Fl until spring. We do have our first winter Yellowstone visit planned for early Feb. We'll see!

I want to tune my lenses to the 850 and 500 if necessary. I have been shooting the 200-500 and G2 for a while now and can't complain. I did use a 600f/4E for a couple weeks and had a ball with the 1.7 and 2X. Besides landscapes, Old Faithful and Canyon, we'll be spending four or five days in Lamar Valley checking out the wolves. Kathy follows the pack activity.

In Fl, I usually have the 200-500 or G2, depending on the light, on the 500 and the 70-200 on the 850.

Keep at it! It appears you're getting the hang of it.

Winter trip to Yellowstone...Can I come!!, huh, can I come!!. That sounds like too much fun.

Re-landscaping your lawn. That sounds like something for next month which never...ever comes.

You will have to lead me through the part about depending on the light whether you will use the Tamron or the Nikon??

Yep, we've really been enjoying Apopka. It's a lot further from here than it was from Clermont and $30 in turnpike tolls but worth it. We've really been doing well there. Just got back from Black Point and it was dead. Can't wait for Florida's Fall and Winter.

FWIW - I believe tuning is unnecessary when using live view. If you try this, you may also use the magnification feature in live view with manual focusing.

Yeah, but I can't do that with my style of shooting. Landscapes and flowers and such, but not BIF.

Well, if that's the case I will just return it and buy another good old dependable Nikon.

I love Black Point and I am fairly close to Orlando Playground. Circle B and the tram are a pleasure as well. Sometimes I go nuts and get into Imagemeister's territory! He has many great choices!

My 200-500 is typically much faster acquiring focus over the G2 particularly in poorer light conditions. Nice light and I'll do the G2 for a little extra reach. I will admit that it was not worth getting the G2 for the extra 100mm. No matter what the length, many of us think we'd be happier with a little more. (Don't let your mind wander, Chief!)

We've already had a couple good frosts and lawn planting is working well. I spread over 100 yards of fill and loam, raked, seeded, rolled, spread hay, built a low stone wall to hold crushed rock against the rear of the house and a block wall across the front. Other than that, I slept...quite well, I might add!

Curious minds want to know. Thanks for any suggestions.

I have one of these for Canon. Don't know if you know, or have the console to do it, but these have an internal calibration ability. Total PITA to do. I did it for my Tamron 24-70 that pretty much lives on a 6DmkII, but honestly haven't used the 150-600 enough yet because I just got a 90D to wed to it, and still learning the camera before I mess with trying to calibrate the lens. The 150-600 will likely be on that body 98% of the time, sitting by the backdoor. I'm not good enough yet to get good shots of BIF, but mine seems to do pretty well when the target isn't moving faster than I'm capable of capturing.

Maybe the previous owner tweaked the lens internally, and just needs to be hooked up to do a reset back to the factory defaults? Might ask B&H if they did that check.

Here is one of my birds in flight. I have many more, some posted on the HOG and some not. This was done with my Nikon 200~500mm. Yeah, thanks for the info, I knew about the console for fine tuning the Tamron. I went out and took it through it's paces again today on my D500. It looks much better on the crop sensor D500 than on the full frame and I kinda expected that to be the case. That 46 mp. sensor on the D850 sees everything including small technique errors on the photographers' part. I'm going to go ahead and give the D850 auto fine tune software a try. I suspect it will be all right in the long view.

I bought one of these used from B&H for the little extra reach it has over my 200-500 Nikon. And my wife and I are always switching the camera back and forth on the wildlife drives and have missed shots because of it. I figured that I could get two cameras going with long lenses. The problem is that the Nikon lens walks all over the Tamron on focus. No competition at all.
I'm using the Tamron on a D850. When I called B&H and suggested that I might try the auto focus fine tune to see if I could fix it before I returned it, the tech said yes he would recommend doing that.
I've never had to fine focus adjust any of my Nikon lenses so I have some questions about that. If I use the fine focus tune and it works, can I swap the lens between the two cameras or will it have to stay with the camera that it was adjusted with? Being a used lens I wonder if that's why the original owner dumped it? I'm assuming that B&H checked it out before putting it in stock? Did the lens go wonky again after B&H checked it out and I bought it? Will I have to repeatedly adjust it?

The first edition Tamron didn't play well with Canon 7DII's, but was spot on with my 6D. This was before the ability to fine tune yourself with the TAP. I sent it off to Tamron, they did 2 firmware updates and tuned it to a 7DII. Problem solved. And the same week Canon put out a firmware update for the 7DII that also solved the problem.

With my Canons any lens focus tuning is saved in the camera body, not the lens, but with the TAP allows firmware updates and tuning. Not sure, my G2 worked out of the box so the TAP has never been opened.

I bought the G1 about 5 years ago and it has successfully worked on my D300,D7000, and D500! I never had to fine tune it, but I have read on this forum that there is inconsistency from one lens to the next. So I rented it first and when it worked on all my cameras I purchased the lens I rented, and lensrentals deducted the rental price. So far I've seen no reason to upgrade to the G2.

I use this lens on a regular basis, have never had a focusing issue. Good luck to you.

I also have the G2 version of this lens and use it on my D750. In case others haven’t mentioned Tamron has a TAP in console to upgrade the firmware if it needs it and another way to fine tune the lens to your camera. I am not sure if this is even better than the 850’s auto fine tune. You can send to Tamron from what I understand if you don’t want to do this. Others may have additional info.

I had both lenses. I found that the VR and focus acquisition on the Nikon 200-500 f5.6 is far superior to the Tamron 150-600. I spent a lot of time adjusting the Tamron with the tap-in console and software. I got the lens very sharp when using it on a tripod, when setting it up (Very Sharp at all focal lengths), but when it came to real world shooting, it would misfocus or the VC wouldn't work well. I did get some very good shots with the Tamron, but not consistent. When I'm using the Nikon, most of my shots are sharp. I amazed how many keepers I get with the Nikon D850 and the Nikon 200-500 combination. Lens selection and technique is very critical with with the D850. My later copy of the Nikon 200-500 needed no fine tune adjustment (I did many test with it. I'm a pixel peeper). My AF Fine Tune setting is at Zero.

Thanks for responding, Ira. Yeah, I agree with you comparing the two lenses as far as focus and VC goes. And I also agree with the number of keepers from the D850 and the 200~500mm. I continue to be amazed with this combo. I plan to use the auto fine tune with the D850 and see how it goes on the Tamron. I will probably keep the Tamron paired with the D500 and keep the D850 and the 200~500 paired together. I still may have to return the Tamron, if so I will apply the refund to another 200~500 Nikon. I like the idea of that little extra reach but it may turn out not to be worth the hassle.
