I would look into the Panasonic Lumix ZS-200. It has a Leica zoom lens and its very compact.

The OP explained why he needed to take less weight and less bulk, which is exactly how so many travellers feel. So what you are asking is - why buy the Nikon in the first place? Well, to answer that question, technology moves on - even the died in the wool oldies (including Nikon) recognise the advantages of EVFs and articulating monitors, and no more 'clunk click every trip'.

While I respect your opinion my take on the OP's question is that he has the D850 plus tons of glass to accompany it. My point was that just choosing the more than excellent D850 plus one general purpose lens would fit his needs without the expense of buying another camera.

Yes I can think of any number of OTHER cameras that would work just fine, the Sony RX10IV for one, the Canon Powershot models, a Canon G9, G10 or G11 for another. Sure there are other cameras that are fantastic. And Yes I did read and understand the OP's question. Is the D850 and one lens too much weight to you think. It wasn't for me and I was over 70 when I did basically the same thing.

Thanks for your comment but of course hearing from the OP himself would be nice too.

We (wife and I) have made several trips to Europe. I have a ton of equipment but when we travel I carry a small bag wit my 5DIV and a Tamron 28-300 lens and a Canon wide angel. Use a National Geographic bag that hold the camera with the lens and the other lens the pouch holds 2 spare batteries a small pouch for misc. Neve felt I took the wrong equipment.
PS i put a shoulder strap with a cable in it (B&H $25.00) for some locations as parts of Italy and Spain.

I guess that bulk is as much a problem as is weight for the traveller. Twelve years ago I swapped DSLRs for the then new M4/3 and Panny G1 - when lots of photogs were choosing to go for more bulky full frame, so the OP should probably think out his own preferences - weighing up (ouch) the trade-offs accordingly.

I would take the Fuji X100V. This APSC small camera has a fixed 23mm (35mm FF equivalent) lens, 26.1 sensor and its contrast, myriad of additional features and color science is exceptional. $1,399

Thank you all for your time and advice. The main reason I want a smaller camera is so I can just enjoy the trip, and not have to concern myself with the inconvenience of lots of camera stuff. This is likely to be the trip of a lifetime, not just a photo opportunity. Just want to enjoy the trip. Photos, while important, would be secondary. Thank you ALL again

In 2021 my wife and I are planning to take a 2-3 week trip to Europe. I’d like to focus on the trip, and not lug my overweight bag with my Nikon D850, lenses, flash, etc. Can anyone suggest a single camera, that’s easy to carry with good image quality? I’d prefer a camera with a viewfinder and one lens, preferably zoom. I’ve had pocket Canon and Nikon cameras, but not in the last 10 years or so. Not sure what the current state of that art is. Please give me your thoughts. Thank you!

With the gear I have I'd use the D810 which has a built in flash and at 36 M pixels is plenty for travel photos and mout the 28-300 zoom which would cover any focal length needs likely to be required. Another option is to simply mount a 24 or 36mm prime on your D850. Take a day as a tourist in your town with that combination and see what you think, it might surprise you.

I also did a little web browsing and found the following that may help. Good luck and enjoy your trip.

FWIW - I went on a cruise back in January and we stopped at a few places down in the Caribbean. I had brought 2 cameras with me, my Canon 80D (with Sigma 18-300) and my Lumix DMC-ZS100. While on the ship I mostly used the 80D, but when out on the islands, I had my Lumix. I was very happy with the results. In bright light, the smaller 1" sensor did a fine job.

My wife and I went on trip to Europe with another couple. He had a big Nikon and I had a small (first version) Sony RX100. His camera was always a problem. Where do you put it in a small European café? Where do you hide it in a parked rental car? Where do you put it in the hotel? How do you take candid street photos? My camera was always in a pocket or or belt pouch. Because it was so small, my camera saw a lot more use and I came home with more usable images.

Smaller cameras can take better travel pictures!

Rather than buy another camera, I purchased the 16-80mm Nikon lens. It will do everything I want when traveling. I put it on any of my D series Nikons (which are lighter weight than the big ones) I just leave this lens on one camera and use it for everything. This lens is highly ignored by most photographers, but they are the ones missing out.

With both a d7100 and a d7200 in inventory, I will look at the 16-80. Thank you!

I used a Nikon P7800 for a trip thru the Swiss Alps and was satisfied. Large pocketable, etc. The A1000 looks like a successor and has nice capabilities along with things thatbi like, e.g., a view finder - nice when tne sun is blanking the screen, a very lon zoom, etc. Watch for a reconditioned one at nikon com - I saved $$ there.

Another option but not quite pocketable: Olympus mirorless, 4/3rds OMD E M-10 MarkIII with kit lens. Very compsct with a goodly amount of zoom.

I went through the same exercise about 4 years ago when I was heading to California for the Desert Trip concert festival. I wound up getting the Canon G5X. It's an older model now, but is still available and at a price point that won't break the bank. It's not DSLR quality (with a 1" sensor), but it does the job with all the settings you're used to on a DSLR. And with a viewfinder, articulating screen, decent video specs, and RAW capability, it checks enough boxes that this is my "everyday carry" camera.

I'm including a shot I took with it from Nick Mason's recent Saucerful of Secrets tour. The iso and exposure were bumped a bit so there is some noise, but I'm pretty happy with the result. And at this concert and Desert Trip, they were restricting cameras to "non-professional" models, and this one made it through both checks pretty readily.

I would be proud of that photo.
