Does anyone have an answer as to why the focus points on the D850 do not light up in RED as does the D5 and all other Nikon DSLR's that I have owned? Here is what Nikon recommends: In the Custom Setting of the D850 you can select to have the focus point always illuminate which shows a red color upon engaging in AF., but does remain Black mainly. Custom Settings/Auto Focus/a12 Focus point options//focus point illumination/ON. I have done this and it is really a problem to me in that the focus point is hard to find when it is black. Is this a problem to any of you that have a D850? Is there anything that can help with this problem?
Thanks, Butch

I also have a D850, in the custom menu I have my focus point illumination set to auto, even set to ON, the red comes on to CONFIRM you have focus, and in the upper left corner a white dot comes on to confirm focus, the white dot stays on as long as you have focus. But your focus dot will go from red to black. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOUR CAMERA. You focus system is working normally.
In my D850 with the Focus Point Illumination set to either auto or to on, the focus point lights up red for only a momentarily. I did not find anything in the manual that linked the light going on to actual focus. As a confirmation of focus, there is a white circle on a black background in the lower left of the viewfinder. When in focus, the white circle appears and stays on as a complete circle as long as long as you have focus. Personally, I keep Focus Point Illumination off; I can see no useful purpose for it. Page 262 in the owner's manual.
Butch, in the settings menu item a12
Choose whether the active focus point is highlighted in red in the viewfinder.
Auto: The selected focus point is automatically highlighted as needed to establish contrast with the background.
On: The selected focus point is always highlighted, regardless of the brightness of the background. Depending on the brightness of the background, the selected focus point may be difficult to see.
Off: The selected focus point is not highlighted.

Well, I have no recall of how I set it up, but my D850 focus point shows up red when not focused, and green when focused, and never black.
