Nearly any locomotive engineer will tell you that they have hit at least one deer while driving a train. This happended in Africa.

An elephant should be big enough to see. Couldn’t the engineer slow down?

Depending on the length of the train, It may take over a mile to stop a train.

When I was looking into a job with Union Pacific, I was informed that if I were to drive a train for 10 years the odds were that I'd be responsible for the death of at least one human being. That's what ever engineer faces. Unfortunately, trains don't stop on a dime. Attempting to stop one quickly will more than likely derail one or more cars.

Thanks for posting - it's real life and things happen. Here we sometimes have a different problem. In nearby Khao Yai National Park, a car stopped for a bull elephant crossing the road. But the car apparently annoyed the elephant because it walked over and sat on the hood of the car. Imagine explaining that to your insurance agent!

Someone else questioned the legitimacy of this photo: no blood or other damage to the elephant.

Some of the trains passing my home in CA were over a mile long and would take over 1-1/2 miles to come to a stop from 50 mph.

I read that if you do not dispose of your trash properly at Kao Yai, the park will mail it back to you.
