John,
That's about double the price of what gas is in the USA and our folks are all screaming that it's the end of the world.
Maybe if we didn't drive SUV's the size of a small apartment we could actually save ourselves some money.

Kit Lens, this is not meant to be sarcastic but informative.

Are you or have you ever been on any sort of public assistance aside from Unemployment Ins. which is not public assist but insurance you paid for.

Why would you even ask that if this posting is about the price of gasoline.
Croce, Have you stopped beating your wife yet?

I'd be happy to answer your question if you answer mine. I asked first. Why are you reluctant to answer Kit?

Croce, First let me say that I am not reluctant to answer the question, I simply refuse to because it's none of your business. Only an ignorant bigot would assume that because I have a progressive ideology that I am poor or a minority or on welfare. That sir only speaks to your ignorance about what's going on this country. Do you think that the poor, the indigent and the unemployed gave 690 Million Dollars to Priorities USA. Really?
In closing allow me also to say that I really don't give a damn if you beat your wife or not. The question was asked only to make a point that you were out of line but being you can't take a hint, perhaps this posting will spell it out more clearly for you.

As usual Kit Lens your posts say nothing. I do not assume you are poor, but my assumption that you are ignorant and biased is certainly well grounded. You sing the same song in every post in which you participate and I was merely wondering if you had actual experience with the welfare system or were speaking from mere textbook rhetoric disseminated by your socialist studies or the democrat party. There is a difference you know in recounting ones personal experiences as opposed to recounting the imagined experiences of others. I was merely attempting to authenticate the accuracy of your constant cries. If you choose to reject that opportunity fine. Please don't accuse me of cloture. I am not attempting to shut off this debate, if it is one.

Secondly even though you are not willing to clarify your experience Kit Lens, I will answer your question to me. Although I have found it necessary in self defense a couple of times during my life, to literally beat hell out of men, I have never inflicted other than a kind, caressing and nurturing hand to any animal or female human of any age, including my beloved wife. I think it also speaks to your insincere concern for people that you do not care if I or anyone else for that matter beats their wives. If I caught you beating your wife Kit Lens I would immediately intercede and beat hell out of you.

Yes everything has a cost, but when it is uniformly distributed that is fair. What is not fair is our system where I am paying for those who don't have coverage, don't want to work (welfare) and non-legal residence when I have insurance. Look at our system, we have Medicare for the elderly as well as medicate and you don't think that is a broken NHC, think again. We pay the insurance companies large sums of monies just so they can second guess the medical profession and make more profit. Soon if we don't fix our health care system we will be in the same state Greek is in and that is sad.

NOTHING is Free. If you do not think you pay for your "free" healthcare, you are not in the UK, you are in La la land.

To answer your question with common sense and to ignore Kit Len's left wing, look for someone wealthy to blame crap. A good portion of what we pay for Gasoline is Tax, and what you pay is ridiculous tax.

Great Briton has 62 million people on 89,000 square miles population density of 646 per square mile, and 246,988 miles of paved roads.

We have 311 million on 3,120,000 square miles (in the lower 48), with a population density of 103 per square mile ( 83 if you count Alaska and Hawaii) and and overall 55,650,943 miles of paved roads.

Public transportation works just fine in the cities here, You can actually get around just fine, and perhaps even between most cities. But in rural areas, which is the vast majority of land in the US, and where wages are the least- yet they do things like feed us and the world. Kit Lens would have the less fortunate pay for his left wing agenda, from those least able to afford it.

So it is a simple matter of physics why we must have affordable ways to get around, because public transportation would not work out in the vast areas we have to deal with. And why your gas, while so very expensive can get you around pretty well,in spite of its costs.

Becomes tiresome... when the left tries to make their predictable point in every conversation of blaming someone else.

And before he spouts his crap at me, I drive a small used diesel VW bug that gets approximately 48 miles to the gallon, but I have an SUV that I drive when I need it to haul my 3 kids and wife and two dogs, and sometimes to drag a trailer the many miles to anywhere.

The federal tax on gas is 18.4 cents all the rest is state and local taxes. I knew we should never have built the interstate system.

All government control and laws do is cause illegallity. All it does is open the door for fraud. When in Quebec City, I was looking at some wonderful art done by a street vendor. The piece I was interested in was $350 (Canadian). I noticed she had a credit card machine, as that much out of pocket would have been difficult. I told her I would come back later, and asked her if her cc machine was working. She pulled me aside, told me it was working, however, if I paid in cash, she would take $230. She then went on to explain to me that about 49% of her income went to taxes. So which is better, 20-22% of $350, or 49% of nothing?

For every law, or measure of control, people will find a way out of it. Most people are honest, but this type of control will cause even the most honest among us to change. So, when people opt to pay the fine (TAX), rather than for healthcare, and they won't be denied coverage in the ER, and if they refuse to pay even the tax, where does that leave you? STILL PAYING FOR OTHER PEOPLE!

I'll be the first to say that the healthcare issue is ugly, and does need dealt with, but national healthcare is not the answer. I am for people have access to healthcare, but I am AGAINST anything that gives government more control over our lives and wallets.

I respectfully disagree with you, coming from Europe I see more equity in their system than ours. Our politicians may be corrupt but it doesn't negate the social issue of serving the people equitably.

The vehicles in the bottom shot: one is a caravan towed by a Volvo, the other is a coach (bus) and is one of many others nearby.
Coach travel is very popular in the UK as its very cheap but slow, train travel is much faster but very expensive.
Cheers, John Eccles
