From the shape of the stalagmites, would have to guess that the water level rises and the cave "disappears"... only a guess. Love the colour of the water.

I think their stalactites. Remember the saying, when the mites go up the tights come down. If they meet they become a column.

I've always used stalactites- ceiling;
stalagmites- ground.
