I use the ES device with various lenses. If you have no other use for the 60mm just sell it and use your 105mm. You will need to increase the lens-to-subject distance, using the 52mm threaded intermediate tubes from an old manual tube set. Those are about $15 and are very commonly available. You will also need a 62>52 step down ring for another $10.

Thanks for the info. I originally used it with the 40mm micro on a D500. The 60 I've been using on the D850. Unless or until I run out of room in the camera cabinet I'll hang on to what I have. It's all paid for.

Amen. Hanging onto stuff is why I already had the 52mm intermediate tubes and so started checking out how the ES worked with all the macro lenses I had also hung onto. I can do an 80mp full image slide or neg copy if needed (but not with a Nikon).

I no longer own Nikon digital gear, but if I did, those two would be in the bag.

My son uses my mid-1960s 55mm f/3.5 non-AI Micro-Nikkor with an adapter on Micro 4/3 (FF/FX equivalent 110mm). It’s got a distinct “old filmic” look to it.

"What lens would you buy"?

Parameters are: Fx, Under $700

I would like your "Unbiased Opinion" (Dose not matter if you own the lens, as long as you have "USED THE LENS".

If you own, or you have used this lens, I would appreciate any good photos you have using this lens!

I thank you for your honest opinions.

More often than not, such limiters or qualifiers constitute a tell about the OP.

Sure smells like the work of trolls to me. Boone posts a very vague question about Micro lenses. Thomas slams me when I ask for more information to try to help Boone and Boone's only response is to post a snarky smiley face and then is never heard from again. There is more and more of this going on here. The bad actors are going to ruin this place.

Hi -

We're going to need some more information before we can really give you some guidance.

1. What lens(es) do you already have?

2. What do you want to photograph that you can't with the lens(es) that you already have?

3. What camera body or bodies do you want to use this new lens on?

Once we know these answers we can not only help you with a suggestion for a micro lens but also lenses that also work well in other situations. For instance the Nikon 105mm micro is not only a great for photographing flowers and insects, it is also a great portrait lens. The Nikon 60mm micro lens(es) are great for shooting small objects like coins and stamps as well as copying old slides and negatives using Nikon's ES-2 attachment.

Once we know what you want to do and what gaps you might have in your equipment we can be much more help.

You’re not the first to ask such a series of interview-like questions within this type of thread. While it has the appearance of a caring and potentially productive process, it never really works. Usually winds up looking like mere posturing that leads nowhere. Best you can do is go with the opening post and the occasional further replies from the OP. Playing the champion for the OP doesn’t result in a truly more productive thread. Looks good but that’s about all it’s actually worth.

If the OP is less than specific, the advice he gets is whatever Hogsters always say about the nominal topic. OTOH, if the OP is rather specific, Hogsters will ignore that and still say whatever Hogsters always say about the nominal topic.

No use tilting at windmills.

PLEAS READ!!!

I truly thank each and all of you for responding to my question on Macro (Micro) lenses. "I THANK YOU ALL SO VERY MUCH"!

I hope each of you know why I asked the question as I did. For those who disagree with the way I have ask the question, I wanted to hear from the Photographers that have been around for a long time, and have had enough experience with this type of lens.

I (As well as you) know there are some people who comment on some subjects that they have had only a limited hands on experience, or those that are biased to a certain brand of equipment. If you read carefully all the responses, (And I really did listen closely) you can see that there are many Photographers that have, or used, several brands of this lens. And they gave some wonderful incite into these lenses. Some pros and cons of each. Each of these shooters who have spent the "TIME" to evaluate this type of lens, and have arrived at their own conclusions of each lens.

Honestly...to form any "FAIR CONCLUSION", to almost any one thing..."YOU HAVE TO SPEND THE TIME IN TESTING"! And I feel that person that considers his/her self as a "Professional", arrives at a conclusion through his/her "OWN EXPERIENCE" with that thing regardless of what that thing is!

Certainly..., surely..., they have all read articles, watched videos, ask questions, or in some way "DID PART OF THEIR OWN RESEARCH" of the "Thing" they want to learn about!

After doing all of this research (By letting their fingers do the walking) most of these people then "BUY THE THING" and then... "MAKE UP THEIR OWN TESTING" and spend some valuable time doing this testing many times over.

After all this valuable time and money is spent, they arrive at a "CONCLUSION"!

In the end of all this work...they "MAY FIND THAT THEY HAVE PURCHASED THE WRONG THING"!
And they begin again! (Professionals do this)

In closing this lengthy statement, I hope that I have been perfectly clear as to why I ask for "PROFESSIONAL ONLY" to comment on my question. With all the information I have received on this subject from this forum, I will now proceed with my "OWN RESEARCH" and come to some conclusion.

Isn't that what this forum is really about???
Looking...reading...discussing...doing...&...most of all..."LISTENING"!!!!!!!

One person on this forum basically asked: Why I excluded some Photographers from this question? Well "MY ANSWER IS"...

"IF I YOUR GOING INTO SURGERY...don't you "WANT TO KNOW" that the one doing the surgery is a "PROFESSIONAL" ???

I learn more about Portrait Photography each and every day, and with all the practice sessions I do.
Yes...I practice all the time. I get some crazy idea..."AND I TRY IT"!!!

Am I a Professional Photographer?

Yes I am. With over 45+ yrs. of " ASKING...LISTENING....DOING...& LEARNING

Do I make mistakes? All the time!

And yes..."I love to listen and learn".

That is why I ask the question as I did!

"ISN'T THAT WHY WE BELONG TO THIS WONDERFUL FORUM IN THE FIRST PLACE"???????

Sorry if I offended anyone, but now I have a great place to start on my quest of a Macro (Micro) lens!

I thank you all for being part of my research.

THANK YOU!!!

Thanks,
Boone.

Please read my ending statement.

FYI: I did not mean to be "Snarky" to you in any way. I just did not see any relevance to your questions.

I was asking for Professional opinions on a "LENS". And I did not want any other answers!

As far as Me "Not being heard from again: I was only reading the many replies to the question before I gave any response.

I am truly sorry if your feelings were hurt by me or anyone else.

If I have offended you in any way, please forgive me. I am very sorry if I did.

I think I made the post two days ago, so I don't feel my response was untimely.

I can't control others, but I am in complete control of me!!!

Please have a good day, and I so apologize if I personally have offended you.

Thanks,
Boone.

That brings up one of my pet peeves. Many people do not seem to understand how to ask questions that answer their specific needs. There is an art to that, similar to the art of successful sales.

State your OBJECTIVE. This is what you really want to achieve, not necessarily what THING you want to discuss. Example: "I want to photograph coins, stamps, and jewelry," should lead to a different sort of answer (and product) than, "I want to photograph wasp nests."

State your BUDGET. The OP here did that; many do not, initially, so they get $5000 answers when they can't spend more than $500. For instance, a member asked about scanners in another thread. Well, you can buy a $69 toy, or a $25,700 film scanner, or anything in between. Most UHH'ers settle for something in the $200 to $1200 range, tending towards the low end. But occasionally, they want the exotic.

State your PLATFORM. This is like Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Panasonic, Olympus, Sony, Fujifilm... as well as medium format, full frame/FX, APS-C/DX, Micro 4/3... or Windows, MacOS or Linux... or Toyota Hybrids, Ford pickups, or general SUVs. No sense looking at bricks when you go into Home Depot to buy 2x4s.

So, "I wanna photograph fire ants, bees, wasps, hornets, spiders, scorpions, and snakes. I can spend $700 for a macro lens for my Nikon D750. What would you recommend?" would narrow the field down to a manageable group of possible answers. Throw in an Epi-Pen and a snake bite kit, steel toed boots, a bee suit, some Benadryl...

Purchase the used Canon 100mm f2.8 L with IS.
Then you have the best and no need to ask further.
If it fits your camera that is another matter as there was NO camera specified.

I don't do gobs of Macro work, but I own both a Nikon 105/2.8D Micro, which I like quite a bit and a Nikon AF 60/2.8 (non D) which I bought used to make copies of slides with my ES-2 and D850, which I also like. If I did more Micro work, I would also want something longer as Gene discussed. My work is mostly in Sports. Best of luck.
