I use Luminar 4 as a plug-in to Lightroom use it for several features - sky replace, erase, B&W, Looks. I pre-ordered Luminar AI. I sent a support request to Skylum re: Luminar AI being a new product and awaiting repsonse.
What I understand - share any thoughts
1. Luminar 4 AI is a new and separate from Luminar 4
2. Luminar 4 will be supported at least one more year (but it sounds like it may be going away)
3. I cannot locate info stating 'non-AI' post-processing will exist in Luminar AI for those that want more control
4. There appears to be a 7 day refund option AFTER release for anyone that pre-ordered
5. (not knowing more details) I wonder if either application can be a plug-in for the other
I've been using Luminar for the last 5 years as my main photo editor, as a replacement to Apple's Aperture. I did sign up for Luminar AI but will keep Luminar 4, of course. My understanding is that you can take control of the editing process or leave it to the program, based on a statement in the Luminar AI FAQ section:
"Does AI mean the full-automation of photo editing?
Not exactly. The main purpose of Artificial Intelligence is to make your image editing more creative and enjoyable. LuminarAI achieves this by automating the most complex and routine tasks. But you always maintain complete control over the process.
When you first open a photo, LuminarAI will suggest editing templates. You now have three choices.
Choose one of the options as presented.
Customize the strength of the Template with one slider.
Click the Edit button and see all the tools in use. You can now modify, customize and add whatever you want with our extensive editing toolset."

I also have Luminar 4, as my stand alone and I have ordered AI and will keep both for at least 1 year while I get accustomed to the newer version
I too have been a Luminar. user for many years, I've promoted it to the photo club and done several presentations. I love Luminar 4.3, but I understand that Luminar 4.3 will be available for a year after AI is introduced, then it will become unsupported.
Luminar was advertised as a Lightroom replacement, Skylum has abandoned that position.
I'm seriously disappointed in Skylum's new direction. I expect I'll revert totally back to Lightroom and Photoshop.
I Asked the plug-in in question to Skylum. They responded that Lunimar 4.x would not use Luminar AI as a plug-in at this time. Same answer AI as a plug-in for 4.x.
I assume not at this time means, not with December release and they have not decided on future releases.
While I’m not using Luminar 4 as a stand-alone but rather as a plug-in to On1 I’m have also been concerned with Skylum’s direction. Even more as a software guy the development process is based on marketing ’sizzle’ rather than steak. Now they bring out their 3rd major release of Luminar WITHOUT fixing the basic issues. They’ve promised to support and fix Luminar 4 but they said the same thing in the transition from Luminar 3 to Luminar 4 but didn’t fix Luminar 3. I’ve lost faith in them. The old rule of fool me once... I won’t be buying Luminar AI until they have a stable release. If I have to pay more and I feel it’s worthwhile so be it but as a user and supporter of their software since the beginnings of MacPhun if I’m not offered an attractive upgrade price I’m done. And lastly as a software exec for over 40 years, I wish they’d stop calling it AI. It’s not AI, it’s pattern matching.
Oh, I’m a Mac user so I asked if AI was going to an intel app or based on the new Apple Silicon platform. Support said Intel.
I like my experience with Luminar and the HDR software from them. That having been said, I am tired of "new" releases and needing to send them more money. I rarely need "support" on anything but it bothers me that I was sold Luminar 4 as being so fantastic and now they say they won't support it later on. Bah Humbug! It seems like there are too many "upgrades" to both software and firmware these days for any and all devices.

The new version is "Luminar AI", not "Luminar 4 AI", and it is totally separate from Luminar 4.
I won't be pre ordering a pig in a bag software from Skylum. Iv'e lost faith in this company because of this unexpected change in direction. They have been working on new software to market instead of upgrading and fixing the problems with Luminar 4. IMO this is a bad long team business practice.

I just recently read and watched a U-Tube Videos about this product, but I have a "Chomebook" Laptop and was told by someone that is was not compatible with Luminar Photo-Editing Programs. What exactly will I require to use Luminar 4 or AI?

Luminar AI is a very nice application and I prefer the interface to that of Luminar 4. Whilst AI does have AI tools it is not essential to use any of them. It a faster version of L4 with some added functionality.
