Will The D500 take the EN-EL18c Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Batter Kit? And if so, what does it do?

The reason I asked is on the Nikon USA website for the D500 under Camera Accessories it shows the
BL-5 Battery Chamber Cover. So I thought may like the D850 it could take the up graded battery.

Yes it will. Gives longer battery life before recharging.

If you go with the Nikon EN-EL18c battery, cover and charger, that will run you about $550. Plus add to the weight of the camera. A much cheaper option is to carry spare EN-EL15b batteries in your pocket?

It does not fit the camera. It will fit the vertical grip for the D500, if you also buy the BL-5 Battery Chamber Cover.

The grip can also take 8 AA batteries or a second EN-EL 15 with the included inserts.

BTW - the same holds true for the D850 ... you need the grip.

Using the EN-EL 18 gives you an extra frame per second (maybe two?) and a super long battery life.

I picked up both my MB-D17 and MB-D18 new in the box for $225 EA., one had a BL-25 with it and found two (2) EN-EL 18 batteries (a B and a C) on fredmiranda.com with battery ages of 0 for $80 EA. Didn't need the charger since I already had one.

Yes you can. On page 309 of the D500 manual it states that the EN-EL18c can be used, but, you have to have the BL-5 battery door for that battery.
Also, on the battery compatability chart is shows that the EN-EL18c battery can be used in the D500.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.
