Remote Release & Focus

I have discovered that the Vello remote release for my Nikon D850 does not work. The found reason is that when the back button focus is active, the camera will not focus and take a picture on command from the remote. Focus priority prevents the camera taking a picture.
Of course the work around is to change auto focus to manual focus or reprogram the shutter release to set the focus. And who whats to reprogram the back button focus button. Moreover manual focus on anything that is moving produces wonderful out-of-focus pictures.
Any thoughts out there?

I view this as two different scenarios. One, the photo being taken is taken of a subject that is moving. This requires the photographer to be in direct contact with the camera and thus a remote release is not required. That is unless one has a pistol grip type arrangement with the release trigger on the grip.
Two, the scene is rather static and time is available to set up, compose, etc. Then, a remote release is quite handy to use.

Roger that Bob. The "moving" situation I was thinking of was trying to catch a hummingbird in flight at the feeder.

On my Canon, if I have BBF set, the shutter button will not focus, and neither will the remote shutter button.

Modern cameras are marvelous things, you can get them to do many things but you have to tell them what you want them to do. You tell them by using the menu to program them, once you tell them what to do that's what they'll do until you reprogram them.

Save your remote focusing setting in a Custom setting on your mode dial. Just takes a second to switch.

Might try changing AF Priority Selection from "Focus" to "Release"
This solved a similar issue with my Nikon D3x

Check the manual. Most cameras WiFi now. I know for my Olympus E-M1 mkII (an older camera) that I can connect by WiFi and focus and control the exposure with my smartphone. I use that same technique at my work using an Olympus TG-6 on a monopod for pictures in areas that I can't physically get to. Takes a little getting use to but works great.

I also use BBF on my Nikon D500. When you want to use a remote release, I believe all you need to do is change the setting back to Shutter/AF on. Then change back to AF only when done to resume BBF.

AF still works just fine... albeit possibly the initial capture(s) might be a tad off... Use CH (Continuous High) release mode. Steve Perry likes "release" rather than "focus" for BIF. Claims it increases his "Keeper" rate.
Your D850 gets 9-fps in CH with the optional battery grip and EN-EL18a/b

Does the D850 have a "Custom" or "User Defined" setting or a spare user definable button, which you could set up without BBF for those times when you want to use the remote shutter release?
