After buying my T3i I have been looking at lenses trying to decide what I want to add. My wife says to me today, I think my old camera is a Canon see if that lens will fit. Come to find out she has an old EOS Rebel G with a 35-80mm 1:4-5.6 on it. :) Free lens.

Free is always good, but if you're like the rest of us you are not always going to get off so easy.

LOL ... free is about all it is. Even in being new to all this I know by the feel of it and look that it is an entry level (at best) lens. I figure it will give me a smaller lens to work with when I am going to post to Facebook...lighter, smaller than my 18-135 just not the quality.

Surprisingly, this is a pretty sweet lens despite the plastic mount. Congrats on the find.

Jerm,
If the rain stops I will try to go out and get some shots.

I'm currently using this as my main macro lens, with a couple of extension tubes. This should give you an idea of what's possible.

Messing around with it, no filters in a dimly lit room and a none to willing subject...but it caught her pouty lip well. :)

As Jerry has noted, with a couple of extention tubes, this lens makes a quite nifty little macro lens, especially for the price. Google has all kinds of macro conversion links to more info...

I just found the macro conversion for it. Looks like all you do is remove the label sticker from the front of the lens, expose three screws and remove the front glass...all the macros I am seeing are pretty impressive for a lens most people say is junk. Considering doing the mod.

I did the mod, but the problem is you are limited by the focal distance. Without the front element, you have to be nearly touching the subject for it to focus. I ended up putting mine back together and using extension tubes instead.

Here you go, the screw out of the front of the lens with a jewelers screwdriver I used.

Before buying my present camera, a Nikon D5000, I used a FujiFilm FinePix S2 Pro. I found that my old Nikon lenses, some as old as 1968 models, worked perfectly with manual settings. Until recently, I preferred all manual settings.

Both Nikon and Canon have been pretty much considerate of their old customers in making their newer bodies backward-compatible with old lenses. The D5000 is another story altogether. The body will not recognize the older lenses as even being there, let alone working.

Brad, I am single, you have inspired me! I will place a singles ad today; "Single guy-photo-fanatic with Nikon Lenses wants to meet lovely gal-photographer with beautiful digital Nikon-body."

Guys, beautiful macros and great lighting. Kudos.

Dpullum,
Love it...unfortunately the only single photo-fanatic I know is not worth hooking you up with, I do think he has a Nikon. You go out there and a guy with good lenses, I am sure there are many guys who would fall for your beautiful digital Nikon-body. :)

Gee, don't want to break your heart, but I'm a single gal-photo-nut-with-extra-lenses (film shooter turned digital) and in the same part of FL-----but I'm a Canon girl!!
