Protective filter or no filter that is the question

I personally will never be without one again. I recently bought a new 24-70 2.8 Tamron that came with a Hoya UV filter. Unfortunately the filter was backordered. On my very first day of shooting, my small sheltie dog who loves to surprise me and run and jump up into my arms did just that and her paw hit the camera hanging around my neck. Yep. about a 3/8" scratch on the lens itself. Fortunately, the scratch is very near the edge of the lens and well away from the opening in the center of the lens into the camera. I have done every test I can think of and thankfully can find no evidence that the scratch is impacting images. They are tack sharp even in bright sun where I thought the scratch might flare.

Until I find that there is some reason to, I probably will not send the lens in to be fixed but every time I look at it I think, If I only had a filter on it......

Thanks for the reminder. I have been aware of the risk forever, but have ignored it. I'm going to order a skylight filter for each of my lenses today. Best wishes > Alan

With digital sensors, can I assume that there is no difference or preference between a UV or clear glass filter? (High quality filters).

As someone who lives near a large body of blue water, I find UV filters still play a role high up a mountains, or by large bodies of water where UV rays are more prevalent. I share my lenses between film and digital bodies, and for the most part, have UV filters on all the lenses.

OP Here again,
"Why not try putting a protective filter on your lens and compare a test shot with and identical one without the filter. Only if you can see the difference do you have a hard decision to make."

Well I took pecohen's advice and compared everything that I could and there was absolutely nothing that I could detect different between the UV filtered image and the unfiltered image. Both taken on a tripod using a remote shutter release. I am retaining all my filters on all my lenses and am going to live happily ever after.

I would rather clean a protective filter than a lens, also there is concern by some that in the higher altitudes a UV filter can prevent autofocus from working on UV, resulting on SLIGHT out of focus. Therefore, I use a UV filter, but mostly for lens protection, and I would not lose any sleep if the UV filter got lost, but I like to keep some protection on the lens...

ALL of my lenses have protective filters for dirt, moisture, etc. It is easier and cheaper to throw away a scratched filter than a lens. I have UV filters and use them, and see no difference ( the sensor might) between them and clear glass filters, but it is essential that any filter be coated to eliminate reflections. I learned that uncoated filters can have reflections that are NOT blocked by the lens coating ( surprise!!).

Gerald, You’ve got a very creative eye for taking great photos. I had to pull myself away from your photos or I would have stayed up too late. I’ll be back to look more later. Thank you.

Been shooting with SLR then DSLR for 52 years and have never used any protective glass over the lens. I dropped a lens off a mountain trail and it bounced a good 100 feet over the rocks. A protective filter over the lens wouldn't have helped. LOL

What's cheaper to replace, $40 dollar filter or $500 dollar or more lens.

My camera slid off the tripods arca Swiss mount, the lens hit the pavement, and it took 2 hours to remove the destroyed clear filter from the lens, but the lens suffered no damage.
