Question concerning Acronis full backup

If you're willing to buy Microsoft 365 (subscription ~$100 annually), you get Office and a lot more, including up to six users, each with a Terabyte of OneDrive storage. If you set up OneDrive and sync it to your new computer, you can then drag-drop your data directly from the external drive to your OneDrive Folder. This is easier said than done, but once done there are big benefits: You can have your OneDrive data on multiple computers, Tabs, even your phone. When you get a new computer, you link it to the Internet, sync the computer to OneDrive and while it's loading your data, you load the operating software.
This doesn't take the place of external backups, but it makes it much less likely that you'll ever have to use them.

My experience with Acronis (15 years?) has always been that their support team was the best of all. I suspect (imho) that they use customer questions as "beta" users. I would call them and they should lead you through everything that TrueImage can do to solve your issue -- most like by remote access. And the best part, if they can't solve the problem immediately, the programmers will, most likely, create something that works within a couple weeks.

In my post I indicated I was trying to install Microsoft Office 2007 (not windows 2007) sorry if I was not clear. If I understood Acronis correctly they do indicate that the restore function can/will bring over programs. I am attempting to locate a copy of Microsoft Office 2007 for that particular situation. We'll see what happens. Thanks for your feedback.

You might want to read this application note from Acronis: https://kb.acronis.com/content/19296

“19296: Acronis products cannot be used to transfer applications to different system or upgrade OS”

This is actually a Microsoft mandated limitation. The specific copy of Windows that came on your computer is the only one licensed for your computer and the license isn’t portable. You can buy a different copy to put on your machine and install it normally. The backup you take from an old computer isn’t licensed - it left the license behind. You can’t overwrite the Windows on a new computer either. They will allow you to restore an OS disk to another equivalent computer system (grudgingly). Okay so you say who cares. Microsoft isn’t going to go after you - true. But they will and have gone after backup product vendors so that they limit their software so that this can’t be done. Retail full and some upgrade copies of the software do not have these limitations and they can be moved around at will and they can be restored successfully (usually).

The question for the OP is: what is the OS on the old system? I don’t see where this is mentioned on the thread.

Personally, I would copy over the data files and re-install the aps (typically from the installation files in the download folder), but I’m interested in how this turns out. I just don’t see how Acronis is going to find every registry entry for every ap AND modify or add it as appropriate for the new HW, but I’m always eager to learn. It’s easy enough for Microsoft with their aps, but for the zillions of others, every one will make different registry additions and changes AND many of those will be affected by the HW.

Acronis works fine for moving your programs and files to a new computer. No need to re-install programs. I’ve done it a couple of times.

As I read the Acronis docs (and correct me if I’m mistaken) the Universal Restore will restore the entire OS and application and data to a different HW platform, but it will not (a) allow you to change the OS to a different version and (b) it will not just migrate the aps and data, leaving the existing OS on the new machine as is - it migrates everything - OS, aps and data. Is that your understanding as well?

With the same OS, or a different OS? From reading the OP’s original post, he wants to move just the aps and data to the new machine, leaving the new machine’s OS intact, and that’s what I’m questioning.

Good question. I always used the same OS from my old PC. Don’t know if you can just move programs and files with Acronis.

If you just want to move programs and files you can use PC Mover, and Zinstall that I know of. I’ve used PC mover. The kit Provides a usb cable with their software for doing the transfer. Very easy to use. I think I paid about $50-60 for it.

Try it. the worst that can happen is that you have to wipe the drive and re-install windows. Nevertheless, my computer guru says that transferring applications by software never ends well.
