I discovered I might be learning MORE photography stuff instead of napping from the bourbon and beer effect!

Raw image files don’t work like video and audio files. There’s no codex you can just install and read the raw files. That being said, if all of the updates to CS6 are installed it should be able to handle raw files from a D3200. Even though Adobe isn’t offering new updates to CS6 you b should still be able to update it to the last version. Other than that, as previously stated, you can either download the current Adobe Canera Raw and convert them to DNG files or use the Nikon software and convert to TIFF.

Back to our OP: are you saying you could edit D3200 RAW (NEF) in your CS6 before the WIN10 upgrade? Without pulling the compatibility manuals, is the problem simply that you need to restore a Windows file association so that the NEF file type launches your CS6 software?

To get the codec needed to view RAW files on Windows 10, go to:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/raw-image-extension/9nctdw2w1bh8#activetab=pivot:overviewtab#

I did some time ago, and it works well.

Microsoft says:
“You can acquire the extension to install on your devices but Windows 10 May 2019 Update (version number 1903) is required to install the extension. The Raw Image Extension adds native viewing support for images captured in raw file formats produced by many mid- to high-end digital cameras. By installing the package, you will be able to view thumbnails and metadata of supported raw file formats right in Windows File Explorer or view images in the Photos app. The current version of the extension supports a long list of cameras, however some Raw formats like GPR are not currently supported.”

CHG_CANON, exactly! This is the first thing I thought of.
There were other items that did not work after W10 was installed.
I too called on those items, Outlook emails, HP 4200 Laser printer. Each time, MS "fixed" the problem after telling me that the drivers were not supporting them any longer. Then, BAM!!, they were fixed and working.
Several other small things.
This is why I said I was calling MS to see what they say or could do.

ALL UHH members that replied, were GREAT help, as I asked for!! Cannot say thanks enough!
But, for now, I'm laying the problem at MS and W10.
It's sad when a platform is working GREAT and they want to change it only to cause some (me) problems.
W10 is NOT the panacea, in fact it is harder to move around and get what you want where you want, In my opinion.

Concerning the fee to "rent" the programs, I currently pay for the Office Suite, $10 a month, since I pay in advance I get the program a few cents cheaper, they say.... Again, their previous version was working GREAT and then the change...ALL sorts of issues!!

THANKS AGAIN ALL for your input!

Unfortunately, as camera manufacturers continue to upgrade (change) things in the type of resultant files produced, it becomes necessary for processing software purveyors to accommodate by upgrading their software. Some could choose to do that retroactively, but that would delete a selling point for their always “newer and better” version.

Loren, thanks for the two posts' about my issue(s). Concerning the Codex download. I want to open the RAW files in CS6 and make adjustments, etc. This I cannot do currently.

From Adobe, the D3200 NEF files need Adobe Camera Raw of at least v7.1. Your CS6 can support ACR up to v9.1.1. So, do you have the ACR version installed?

A few googles found this link for a download / install file from Adobe for the older ACR software (Windows):

http://swupdl.adobe.com/updates/oobe/aam20/win/PhotoshopCameraRaw7-7.0/9.1.88/setup.zip

Comments in the support thread (dated Dec 2016) say this is the solution.

Don't run the file directly from the link. Rather, right-click and 'save' the link as a local file to your harddrive. Then, extract the contents of the ZIP and finally, right-click the extracted EXE and use the Windows option 'Run as administrator'.

I have been using Microsoft Windows since it first was offered. There have been some iterations I have preferred over others, but the only one I really didn’t like was 8. Fortunately, it was followed quickly by 8.1, which was a bit better, but still no favorite. As soon as 10 became available, I switched, and have been very happy with its capabilities and performance. Prior to Windows, I had been using MS-DOS from its inception. Over that time, I have had an occasional “blue screen of death” – but few and far between, and easily remedied. I always install the updates to Windows as soon as available, and to date have had no problems at all, even with those of recent vintage, which from some users have occasioned critical comments. I am a very happy Windows user!!! I must admit, however, that I was quite reluctant to change from MS-DOS to Windows at first, as I did not wish to give up the command line control DOS afforded.

Over the years, as noted, I always have updated, and always have used anti-virus software. For some time, I have been settled on Avast, Malwarebytes and cCleaner (the free versions), which I run daily. Prior to Avast, I had been using Bitdefender, which is good, but a resource hog. Avast never has demonstrated any effect on performance.

I do realize that there are those who prefer other hardware and/or operating systems, and early on, while working in a computer store, did try Apple, but did not like it at all!!! – nor did I like the proprietary system philosophy of operation. I prefer to be able to build my own, and easily change components at will.

Again, I am a very happy Windows user – it works well and causes me no problems.

You can use free Nikon software available from Nikonusa. The RAW converter is Nikon NX-D. The Nikon image viewer program (including Nikon Transfer) is Nikon View Nx-i. You can launch NX-D from inside NX-i.

Here is the link to download both together. Note that the installer installs both ViewNX-i version 1.4.3 and Capture NX-D version 1.6.3; These are the latest versions:

https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/sw/175.html

Once downloaded, you can make Tiffs or Jpegs and process them in your version of PS.

I use these programs all the time, especially View Nx-i to cull images, etc. The Nikon user manual documentation is much improved over earlier versions. I sugget you give both of them a try and see if they will help you accomplish what you need to do.

Going from Vista to ANYTHING is an upgrade.

And for those that find the Win 10 interface unfamiliar, you can always download and install Classic Shell and you can configure Explorer for the classic view also.
