Helium is a component of natural gas, in varying percentages depending on the well used. Most of the world's helium comes from the US and a couple of locations in the Middle East. In the '30's we had a total monopoly on helium and would not sell it to Germany which is why the Hindenberg used hydrogen.

I knew it had to be simpler than a five mile high snorkel to get it.

Race cars use nitrogen to fill the tires because air contains some water that changes the pressure in the tire as it gets hot which changes the handling dynamics of the car at high speed. They use nitrogen because it is cheaper that drying the air. There is no reason a passenger car would need nitrogen filled tires except to increase the profits of the dealer that sells it. As for filling optics with argon it too is all about water. The argon is completely dry and so condensation will not occur on the elements in cold weather. The only optics I own that I know are argon filled are a pair of Zeiss binoculars. I zoom lens that changes volume could not be sealed.

Also true of refrigerants. Older vehicles that were built with R12 in their a/c will leak when converted to R134a if the hoses are not replaced with compatable hoses since R134a molecules are smaller then R12.

Thank you I believe you just solved my truckā€™s ac issue that my mechanic has been unable to solve!!

One advantage of Nitrogen in passenger car tires is that the decreased moisture helps preserve the life of the tire pressure sensors in modern cars. Having said that, unless your car is completely maintained by the dealer, including adding air to tires periodically and performing all tire changes, the Nitrogen rarely lasts past the first tire change.

My worst spell checker faux pas was an email to our head of System Engineering, a guy named Diptish Data. After the spell checker finished, the salutation read: ā€œHello Dipshitā€. You canā€™t make this stuff up.

I'm aware of Nitrogen or Argon purged Binoculars, and spotting scopes, and probably some special purpose scientific optical systems. Those are sealed tubes. But I'm not aware of any Dslr or Mirrorless camera lenses that are purged with Argon Or Nitrogen. Many, especially zooms have lots of moving elements, and internal volumes inside the lens change, Some primes have floating elements & VR/IS. Sealing them to the same degree as the (relatively) simple optical tubes in Binoculars , Spotting scopes, & Oculars, would be very expensive. I have Lots of high end lenses from Canon ,Nikon & Hasselblad and have never seen one.
Have I just missed its? Which camera lenses do you know to be purged with Argon or Nitrogen?
I'm asking because I'd like to learn about that if it is true.
Thanks

I recently took a class on vacuum technology. One of the topics was leak detection using helium and the point was made that "everything leaks". He is a noble gas, while common in the universe, it is not common in the atmosphere which could interfere with the detection process. Also the element is the 2nd smallest and can make its way through a small hole.

That got me thinking about cameras and lenses. The best lenses use argon, also a noble gas and a large molecule, to fill the space between the elements. The question is how long can be expected before the gas can become contaminated with atmosphere?

We all know removable lens cameras will build up dust and obtain a film (no pun intended) on the sensor even if you never remove the lens.

Ten or fifteen years ago we all had to worry about the pins in our cameras that our Compact flash cards plugged into. About four years ago we began to worry about whether our lenses were micro adjusted for our camera bodies. Next came shutter counts and wondering when our cameras were going to stop working. I resisted worrying about any of these things, but I am not sure I can let this one go. What if the argon leaks out of my lenses? Let's see; Covid, left and right wing wackos, election fraud, Lebanon, my 69th birthday coming up, and now argon leaks. I will never sleep again.

Speaking of hydrogen. . . can anyone tell me, FOR SURE, how hydrogen is produced commercially? The 2 methods I have in mind are 'cracking' methane (or other hydrocarbon molecules) into carbon & hydrogen, and electrolysis of water. Either of which would require a bit - quite a bit? - of energy. So, how can hydrogen as a fuel to replace gasoline be economically possible?

Is the cost to create hydrogen more or less than the cost to create gasoline?
