Quite honestly, I fly quite a bit and a major boarding annoyance is people carrying bags onboard that is clearly larger than the published guidelines. Do so at your own risk.

If I’m checking camera gear I want it on a pelican case. If I’m carrying on I use a camera bag. One thing is just in case you need to check it, make sure it doesn’t contain batteries.

My rule for years has been NEVER check in camera gear. Put tripod in checked luggage with clothing and take a carry on that will fit for lenses, etc. Using that approach has never caused problem or a loss.

Hello! I am hoping someone can give me some advice from experience! I have the Pelican 1560 for my gear and am taking a trip tomorrow. I know it’s technically bigger than the dimensions allowed, but I’m wondering if it may still fit. I know, I know, but the flights are only 1/3 full so that‘s the only reason I’m trying (it isn’t taking space from someone else)!

So my question: has anyone traveled on a delta plane with a pelican 1560 as a carry on?

I flew a few years ago when planes were really full and saw a young lady pull a three suiter down the isle and try to put I in an overhead. Two guys got up to help her and cabin crew never said a word. It took the three of the like 5 minutes to get the over head shut.

I had a larger than standard roller bag that I used to carry for long trips like a week at a trade show, and I never had it questioned in 20 years of flying with it and never had it not fit in an overhead, BUT I also never blocked the aisle putting it in the overhead. I never check anything unless traveling with my wife or flying a small commuter plane where you check at the gate and pick up at the plane - seen too many trips ruined by lost luggage and seen too many bags laying on the tarmac in the rain after falling off the baggage cart.

If those dimensions were for a soft rolling case or even a mildly compressible hard side you would be fine. But a Pelican is like a tank and the 10.2” height may not fit if you have to place it in a bin with the 22” length facing out the opening. I barely get in a 9.5“ case. You can, I would think, lay it side ways across the bin without a problem.

Thanks everyone for the tips and advice! It got perfectly on both flights thankfully! Didn’t even hold up a line, just tossed it right in. I would edit this question so as to not keep the thread going but I don’t know how to.

If you get caught and have to "gate check" have a non-TSA lock with you so you can lock your case and have a better chance that nothing will disappear. Also gate check will be available at jetway and not at baggage claim. Good luck!
If you travel business class you will have less scrutiny and a larger overhead space!
