The dynamic range isn’t so great on the 500. Just google it

I have found that most complaints around D500 dynamic range are from people who haven't learned how to use the camera and "when to do what." It has never been an issue for me, even in some tough situations. In fact, the Photons to Photos graph shows less than one stop difference between the D500 and the D850. It is very close to the D810. That's pretty good performanbce, given the demonstrated capabilities of those two cameras.

I have done considerable research of these two camera. Half of the time, I am led to believe that the D500 is a superior camera, image wise, to the D7500, plus it has more bells and whistles. But, then I read that the two cameras have the same sensor, and basically the same "guts," so it leaves me wondering, is the D500 that much better than the D7500. So, I am asking any Hogger who has actual knowledge of the two cameras. is the D500 just a hyped up version of the D7500, or is it a better camera than the D7500? For my interests, I am not into video, not into GPS or Bluetooth connection, just into shooting sports, wildlife, and landscape. I am mainly interested in image quality, being able to shoot in low light conditions, but still not get a lot of noise ( I realize the lens choice plays a role in noise in photos!). I would appreciate any HELPFUL, POSITIVE comments, please. Thank you.

The D500 is a legendary Nikon camera and probably the best crop sensor camera ever - certainly the best DSLR crop sensor camera.

That said, I had a D7500 and it was very compitent. I am sure the image quality is the same - they both have the same sensor and the Expeed 5 processor. That said, the D500 does have a more sophisticated AF system using 153 AF points with 99 cross-type versus the D750 using 51 AF points with 11 cross type. This may actually matter if you are shooting hardcore action.

Additionally, the D500 has 2 card slots and the D7500 has only one. So if this is a consideration for you the the D500 clearly wins.

Finally, I believe the D500 shoots 12 frames per second (not 100% sure), but pretty sure it is faster than the D7500 which shoots 10 frames per second. Also, the buffer depth of the D500 far surpasses the D7500 and with the XQD card that the D500 utilizes, you will be able to shoot much larger bursts with the D500 than the D7500. Also, Nikon claims that they will update the XQD slot on the D500 to accept CF Express sometime in the future - when this happens it is likely that you will never out run the buffer making unlimited bursts possible.

So, if you are concerned about any of the things mentioned above get the D500 - if not, the D7500 is a nice camera and the IQ should be the same.

Hope this helps.

Hi to you Hoggers. If I was to buy a DX format camera today. I would definitely go for the 500. I had a d7200. Which turned out some great photographs with it. I purchased a d750, not because it was full frame. But I had an automobile accident and it was hard to look through the viewfinder because of an eye injury. There is a website labeled Juza Photo. Where you can look at all the free. Lenses and bodies and see what you like. The d500 sensor is a great sensor that turns out really nice images. Plus if you photo birds or sports it's right up your alleh.

You mentioned the magic word. Sports. The real difference between the two cameras is the AF system. If you were just shooting landscapes, family photos, or portraits, I'd say the D7500 would be perfect. Also, if weight were an issue, the D7500 would be perfect. I bought one for my daughter and it's the perfect size for her. If you can handle the extra size and weight of the D500 it's a no brainer. Get Steve Perry's AF book, learn how to use the D500's AF system and you'll never look back.

Neither is better than the other "image wise" - depends entirely on the lens quality.

I have a D500 and the Dynamic range is very, very good. I have produced images and had them printed by Bay Photo. I have prints done on the best paper that I usually let Bay Photo print. I also have them print on Acrylic and Metal. I do 16 by 20, 24 by 30 and even up to 20 by 40 inch sizes. I have never had a client ask me what the dynamic range is on the prints that they purchase. In fact, Dynamic Range does not even suffer on High ISO shots. People get to caught up in the whole "Dynamic Range" kick that it drives me to laughter. Once a person learns how to use that little computer, they will be able to get really good prints out of it. I also have a D5 and it works just as well. Once a person gets into the D850, or the new Canon R5, then they better know how to use a higher Megapixel machine as it will magnify any discrepancies 10times over. The Dynamic Range of a D500 works very well, plus it is a very well built camera and is considered in the Pro Body ranks. Good Luck and Happy Shooting.

The D500 is considered a "baby" D5, has a more advanced focusing system, can shoot faster FPS, has a larger buffer system, two card slots, a higher resolution rear LCD screen, illuminated rear buttons, and better all around weather sealing, among other advantages. The D500 is in a class of its own, and probably one of the best, if not the best, crop sensor camera for wildlife, birds in fight, etc. The D7500 is a very good camera, but probably closer in capabilities to the D7200.

If you say the 7500 is closer in capabilities to the 7200, you haven't read the specs on the three.

think you should go for the d500, it is very good with bird shots & I have a d850 but think the autofocus on the d500 is better

The D500 has a faster frame rate than the D7500. If you shoot sports -- or anything where you might want to shoot on Continuous High and hold down the shutter -- the D500 is a sure bet. I have a D7100, D500 and D850. The D500 is easily the FASTEST of the lot, and you cannot fill the buffer. Of course, the D850 is by far my favorite overall camera; but for action, the D500 is the winner.

I’ve been very happy with my D500. I have never regretted it. I have never missed it not being a full frame.

You interviewed all these people or are you assuming they haven't learned to use the camera? Maybe they just expect more from the camera than you.

Other than AF and a couple of fps faster, what more?
