I was not up to the D500 for what I wanted to spend. Ended up choose a D7200 over the D7500, as, on balance, I liked the features and specs of the 7200 better, but it was close. If/when I get a GAS attack, it will definitely be for a D500. As you can still find good used or refurb D7200, I would recommend you add this to your comparison matrix. If you are not budget constrained, then the D500 would be, I think, the call. As was pointed out, there is nothing you don’t get compared to the D7500, and you get a bit more.

It come down to price, body only D7500 is going to $700 and the D500 for $1,300 (rounding up). The D500 is a better camera, but you got to determine wha is in your budget.

If your looking for a wildlife camera, the D500 stands alone. Has the same separate focusing system as the flag ship D5 and D850. Can shoot more fps, 10.

What never gets mentioned in these discussions is the difference in the user interface and control systems on Nikon's professional cameras versus on their consumer cameras. The D500 provides much more direct control of shooting parameyers, meaning that you may be able to go all day without going into the menu system.

If you do need to access menu functions, the D500 also allows you to build a "My Menu," which can include functions from ALL of the menu sections. You can even have one-button access to the first entry in your custom menu. I use that capability to access the battery meter.

Comments about differences in picture character are irrelevant. Any perceived shortcomings can easily be adjusted out with picture controls, which will directly change JPEGs and give you a better starting point for raw editing.

Arguments between 24 and 20.9 MP are also irrelevant. That's about 3% fewer rows and 3% fewer pixels per row.

Adjusted and operated properly, the D500 is very close to the D810 in low light / high ISO performance, which puts it very close to the D850.

There is a lot of erroneous propaganda about this camera. Shop carefully. If you choose one, learn to use it. It's much more than a focus system and buffer.

I have a D7500, after trading in my big mistake, the overly complicated computer D850, and couldn't be happier. I traded "down" after my I Phone 7 took better photos at the Grand Canon than the D850. I shot with the D7500 at Glacier NP, and could not be happier with image quality.

The D500 has the better overall performance of the 2 as the AF for stills is similar to the D5 pro model.

If you’re interested in wildlife, you will love the D500. My wife is a bird shooter and that 10fps is lights out over any other Nikon save for the higher end models. You won’t regret the move.

D500 for wildlife is great, huge buffer if you want to shoot in succession and choose the best shot.

I own the d500, after my research between the d7500, I purchased the d500 and have shot the camera for a year now. If a crop sensor can be a "pro" camera, the d500 is the only camera in the Nikon kit that qualifies. I keep a Nikkon prime 300mm lens on the camera 80% of the time and love it...

There’s no difference in IQ. The difference is that the D500 is a pro build, more rugged and the big difference for sports and wildlife is frame rate and autofocus. It does 10fps to 8fps, which doesn’t sound like much difference, but that’s 25% faster. It also has a huge buffer if you shoot long bursts. The D500 has 153 focus points of which 99 are the cross type. The D7500 has 51 focus points with just 15 being the cross type. The D500 focus module also has its own separate processor. It’s what you want if you’re tracking BIF or sports. The D500 also has a bigger brighter viewfinder.
