Ken Rockwell takes his film to CostCo. He still shoots film with one of the best Nikons, the FE which allows to shoot 39 frames, like the FM3A.

My Costco quit doing film some years back. It was a pity, too, as they did a bang-up business with film. But corporate overruled them, as some of the stores didn't do much.

Ken's comment was pre-Covid 19, I wonder if some stores are still open.

North Coast (NCPS) has a higher scan resolution option. I started to get frustrated with Darkroom for dust in the scans. NCPS hasn't been perfect either, so maybe it's just a problem for all scan operations. I have NPCS send back a CD with the large files that comes (typically) 2-day business via the USPS. All the different shops have a slightly different mix of why pays the shipping, how large the scans, how quick the service, etc. I'm probably 10+ rolls a years, so these options may / may not apply to your needs.

I ran a mass portrait scanning department from 2000 to 2005. We had nine $50,000 Kodak Bremson HR500 and HR500+ scanners. We cleaned long roll unperforated film (35mm, 46mm, and 70mm widths) with tacky rollers from 3M. The HR500+ scanners had Digital ICE on them. Those got used for carded, cut negatives and short roll films.

We had the most dust issues with individual, "carded" negatives in standard mask sizes A-F. 35mm perforated film and 120/220 film were next. 46mm and half frame 70mm films were the cleanest. But we had our share of dust spotting to do in Photoshop.

Dust is a problem at ALL film labs. You may find some labs cleaner than others, but never expect a spotless scan order. You couldn't afford it if they examined and spotted every frame! You would not like the turnaround time, either. Now if they print larger than a proof, that's a different story!

A UHH member in the past had tried to find / create a list of various developers. That goes back to 2013, if memory serves, but I couldn't find it with the cruddy search of this site. You might just google who does film developing in 2020 if you want a wider list of options to compare.

I just googled: "FILM PROCESSING UGLYHEDGEHOG"
One of the results yielded this link:

That the list?

I still shoot film, black and white and color print and slide, 35mm and 120 formats. I do my own black and white. I bring color print film to a local lab in Albuquerque, NM called Picture Perfect. The slide film I send to Denver Digital Imaging Center, which, contrary to what the name suggests, offers film services, including E-6 processing.

Hi,

I shoot BW, 120 format and develop and print myself. I enjoy trying out different developers and learning their strengths and weaknesses. My overall process and artistic control benefits from developing myself. If you treat it like a science fair project you can have a lot of fun and make pictures that satisfy.

As a fellow Greek, I appreciate the science behind shooting and developing your own large format film and wish I had the time to do it. My favorite camera was and still is the Linhof 617 panoramic with its incredible clarity and file size of up to 1.5 billion MP.
