Ebay, craigslist and other online market sites are prime operating places for scammers and others trying to steal your items or money.

I have both purchased and sold on eBay and only once in probably a hundred transactions was I scammed in over ten years, and that was promptly resolved by PayPal, and eBay barred the seller. Sounds like too broad a statement to make from a previously disgruntled purchaser/seller. One of the major retailers you listed quoted me 70% of retail on a trade-in value, only to come back with less than 50% after their evaluation (after waiting nearly three weeks), saying that while the equipment being traded was in excellent condition, they had many of the same model in stock so they would only offer me a lower amount. Only after I indicated that I would have to return the purchase I made since their trade in value was so low, did they revise their trade in offer. No one alternative is bullet proof. I have had the best success with selling here on the member site.

Surprised no one has mentioned MPB ... I've had good luck with them - they offered better prices to me than the other three cited above. https://www.mpb.com/en-us/sell-or-trade/?gclid=Cj0KCQiA2ITuBRDkARIsAMK9Q7OkQjv8brvDxRQSLINyhlPwuorGjOUs8nPr-3N2wEXXu_8KaImVxgsaAso4EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

I sell my gear to KEH.com. If they have it, I buy my gear from KEH.com They have an excellent rating system and a 14 day no questions asked return policy. Even if you decide to sell on UHH or ebay, you'll want to check the prices at KEH and MPB to get an idea for fair market value.

"The photo vendors require a significant profit margin to stay in business, so they must mark up."

The above is true. Usually vendors of used lenses add a limited warranty to what they sell. MPB and Roberts Camera offer a 6 months warranty on used items.
A private sale never comes wish such a warranty.

Probably the best indicator is to explore some of the on line sales sites and look at actual selling price. The photo vendors require a significant profit margin to stay in business, so they must mark up.

You really can't just apply a percentage to the original value - many factors influence the value of a used item. For example, if the lens is not the newest version of the lens it will command a far smaller price than a used copy of the most recent version of the lens. One way to gauge the value buyers ascribe to the item is to look for recent auction sales of the specific item on EBAY - also look to see how many bids were involved. You can also look to places like KEH, B&H, Adorama, MPB to see what they are asking for the lens. As an individual seller you will most likely not get as much since you would be selling the lens without any warranty or return privilege. It's not a precise science but also ask yourself the question of what you would be willing to pay for the same used item if you were on the purchasing end of the equation - how much would it need to be discounted before you would be willing to forego the benefits of buying a new item.

Does anyone know where to sell used lenses other than eBay? For some reason, I thought I had remembered UHH having a "For Sale" type section.

Yes, click the All Sections button at the bottom of this page and find it. Or use this link: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-6-1.html

KEH.com and MPB.com are other good buy/trade sites. So are Adorama, B&H, and Roberts' UsedPhotoPro.

Thanks for your response. I think I've decided to stay with my original Tamy.

Photography on the net forum also has a very good classified ad section. It is primarily a Canon site, but I see many Nikon listings as well.

I have sold to UsedPhotoPro (part of Roberts Camera) a few times. They were very good.

In my case, I have in recent years bought and sold used gear with established companies with good reputations like KEH, MPB, B&H & Adorama. (I have used all the listed companies.) I did this after mixed results on e-Bay. Too many players there. They accept your price and condition statements then after they have the goods in hand, they play hold-up! Before you challenge my statement, let me say I always used condition judgements one less than the published definitions and always priced toward the low-end of e-Bay achieved average actual prices. I just wanted to sell stuff-not negotiate. It was just too much trouble to deal with for me!

I browse eBay but never try it. Would like to hear from UHHers about your opinions/comments/experience on both buying and selling.

I suggest going to the used websites mentioned and see if they have any for sale. If they do and yours are in comparable condition, expect an offer of 60%-65% of their selling price. Or you can sell yourself, and remember when setting your asking price that you shouldn’t expect what they sell for.
