Fast, backlit, not the best PP skills—this won't win any awards, but it was the only hummer I saw all day and the first I ever captured. I hope I will improve over time! Feel free to share any tips; I could use them.
With some subjects the first is the most difficult to capture. You're over that hump, now go get more shots. Time and patience are major requirements. Sometimes I will sit for hours waiting for something that never arrives, while other times the birds are waiting for me to set up. Photography can be fickle, very fickle. It is also very time-consuming. Sometimes the results are very well worth the wait. Do not fear taking TOO many shots! That never happens. Hummers generally are NOT afraid of people, as long as people do not make sudden, threatening movements towards them. They will threaten you just as a test. Flash will drive them far away. Do not fear their advances, they will fly very close to you if you remain still. Hummers are very social characters but will fight one another at any moment. They are very territorial.
