I have the Alta Pro 263AT with their SBH100 ball head. I bought it for several reasons. 1. Ultra sturdy - built like a rock 2. Tall - allows me to look directly into viewfinder without extending the center column 3. One leg detaches and becomes monopod 4. Center column can be used horizontally 5. Legs extend horizontally for low shooting 6. the SBH100 ball head is heavy enough to easily support my heaviest lenses 7. Price was reasonable
8. Comes with a nice ballistic nylon carrying case. But....., it is heavy (est. 6lbs). Probably not something you would want to carry in addition to a full backpack. IMHO there is one indisputable rule when it comes to tripods: there is no such thing as a cheap, lightweight sturdy tripod.

Altra Pro has a carbon fiber virson of their tripod.
Try estate sales, and yard sales, bought an aluminum Gitzo for five bucks, also found a Gitzo traveler used bought for 75.00 bucks. I've had it for years, works great.
I am sold on Sirui tripods. They are reasonably priced and well made. The one I have is waterproof and has one leg that detaches for a monopod. I would not like the idea of switching in the field except the tripod comes with a great case that holds the two legged left over bipod. With this setup I can use the same Sirui bullhead on either.
Sorry for the typo. That should say bullhead. I have yet to find a bullhead except occasionally in some humans.
I think there is a problem with this keyboard. I'll try again that's bullhead. No it's the software that keeps changing ballhead to bullhead. I got it this time.
