No one has mentioned Edenton, NC. It includes a lighthouse and is a quiet, clean little town. It might be a good place to spend a night.
Ferry to Ocracoke Island in NC.
Thank you. i live in New Jersey and I’m pleased to get this.

I'm happy that it was helpful Karen.
Since you are going to be in VA, it's worthwhile going further north to Assateague Island National Park. The park straddles the southern tip of Maryland and the northern part of VA along the coast. Besides the beauty of the natural coastline and marshes, the park is inhabited by wild horses that provide the opportunity for great sunrise and sunset shots.
NC beaches have some of the best photography venues around. Lighthouses, beach scenes, piers, sunrises, sunsets just to name a few. Wildlife refuges (Alligator River - lots of bears), Neat towns (Edenton, NC), Oracoke Island (ferry boat out and back), Rent a four wheeler and go up the beach North from Duck (wild horses). Keep an eye on the weather in October- hurricane season.
If you're going to Chincoteague, VA, consider going another 100 miles into the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Lots of history, Chesapeake bay lighthouses (different from the Atlantic style), revolutionary towns (Cambridge and more), take the ferry from St. Michaels to Oxford. Avoid the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. See Tangier Island before it sinks into the Cheaspeake - it's a day trip, ferry over at 9AM, back at 3:45PM. If you're a birder, the Eastern Shore has several wildlife refuges with lots of birds wintering over. Check State Parks for available cabins at parks on the Eastern Shore.
Watch out for Covid-19 restrictions. Some places may have quarantine reguulations.
All this makes me want to go back.....

Great walking trails
https://shelburnefarms.org/aboutIt is an old Vanderbilt estate that is now a not for profit organization. Great breakfasts and dinners.
I gave property tours for 8 years. It is an amazing place.
Nice, but it’s a little out of the way for a stop on a trip from South Carolina to Virginia.

There are also wild horses on the Southern end of Assateague in Virginia’s Assateague Island State Park, right at Chincoteague. Also a great lighthouse there.
The road bridge in Moorhead City, NC is also interesting (and a little scary). And if willing to do some of interior Virginia, there's a lot to do: the Tank Museum at Danville; Luray Caverns; Montecello and Montpelier at Charlottesville; Great Falls Park at McLean, and the NRA Museum at Fairfax. And in North Carolina there is the Richard Petty Museum at Randleman.
If you go inland, Skyline drive, Endless Caverns and Shenandoah Caverns, my preference over Luray

Here's lists of lighthouses on the outer banks:
Day Trips - lighthousesLighthouses You Can Climb.
The
Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse is unique in comparison to others and is evocative of what one might see on the Chesapeak Bay.
Check out TripAdvisor for places to stay - there's a plethora of them in this touristy area. October is probably shoulder season so not so crowded.

I am thinking of driving up the coast from Charleston, SC to Chincoteague Island, Va this October to shoot lighthouses and spend the days antiquing or playing on the beach when I am not focused on shooting. What are some little known "non-touristy" spots that I may have missed when googling things to do in this area. Last October was spent on the coast of Maine photographing over 25 lighthouses up there and that entire coastline is just fabulous.
Any recommendations are greatly appreciated. The lighthouse is West Quoddy in Lubec, Maine.

Hello. My wife and I made that trip from Boston up to Bar Harbor. We have some pictures, but don’t ask me the names. I try to copy here some of them.
