Being cooped up inside brings about flights of fancy. Oh what to photograph? The kitchen sink? Nope, it is full of dishes and other things. The dog? Maybe if it would just stay still. Then went to write down a note so I would not forget in the morning what needed to be done. Then it struck! The pen, of course.

Eh? Did I by mistake put this into the attic?

What does using a pen have to do with the Governor?

Most people use a pen to take notes, make shopping lists, sign cheques, or just doodle.

No political intent at all with the post. Just a photo of a pen.

Looks dry to me. No ink?

No ink? It was just filled, and the nib wiped off.

I have been looking at fountain pens recently. Any advice? I was looking at a Dryden Designs but an article I read said that Parker was better. Looking to spend less than $50 since I don't know if I will really like using one. Also want it to use cartridges so I don't have to mess with ink bottles and be available with a fine nib.

Check out antique shops - Parker, Schaefer, and of course Mont Blanc, though the last not likely to be cheap. Mine still works after around 50 years.

Definitely try before you invest. Pelikan used to have some "student" pens. The pen should glide over the paper -- you are not trying to impress three layers of carbon.

Look for a pen store for a wide selection of pens and nibs. They are in most major cities. Just like photography, you will find knowledgeable sales help. Then support your local dealer (just like photography).

I love my Mont Blanc and found that my writing (old fashioned cursive) is more deliberate (speed and thought).

Beautiful memories. My senile tremor makes resuming the old pleasures impossible now.

Thank you for all this wonderful info!!! I will say I nearly fell out of my chair on the Bittner site when I saw the pen for $5300. There are some gorgeous pens on that site.

Thanks again!!

I am going to start with a pen around $50 and see if I like using a fountain pen. I just wish I had pretty handwriting to do it justice but I do like a good pen. I would love to visit a pen store but there aren't any in Fayetteville. Fayetteville is not a nice place to shop. For better shopping you go to Raleigh which is about 75 miles away. I googled pen stores and the closest is Greenville, SC so I guess I will be ordering online.

Thank you for your advice and if I do enjoy fountain pens a Mont Blanc may be on my wish list

Thank you for the recommendations. I am currently looking at a Parker and if I do like using a fountain pen then Mont Blanc will probably be on my wish list.
