Before I saw the second picture, that would have been my suggestion. Looks good!

My friend took this with his Nikon D7200 and a 300 mm lens. He asked me how I would crop it and I found that to be a fairly difficult exercise. Too close and the Tiger Lily becomes the main subject; too far away and the other flowers become distracting so I'll throw it out to you Hoggers. If you will, download the original, crop it as you think best and repost your results (with explanation, if you want to) in your reply.

I'd be interested to see how others see photo this ending up.

Thanks, people.

I cropped it to portrait orientation and cloned out the bud in the upper right. The flowers draw my eye in but the black background allows the hummer to become a contrasting middle tone object which also catches my eye.

I won't quote a reply as so many have gone for a tight crop featuring the bird and the plant.
Which is just what I would have done.

I think the 2nd one is good. Just take out the light spots to the right of the hummingbird.

The hummer in the above is too dark.

I think that the subject should be the lily and the hummingbird with a few elements to frame them. Other than that, the hummingbird is a bit too dark and gets lost in the background. So I removed some of the foliage and brightened the hummingbird and kicked up the saturation a bit to catch the eye a little more.

Looks like most people have pretty much the same idea.

I thought most of the elements in the photo were distracting, so I cropped it to emphasize the bird and brushed out the pod that seems to come out of nowhere upper right. I see several others had basically the same idea.

Reminds me of the saying "All great minds think alike" beyond that we're approaching trying to pick flysh*t out of pepper.

My suggestion, similar, but I like more of the main stalk to give it balance

You got some great suggestions, some doing a little more than just cropping. Pick your favorite and it will be a great photo ready to frame.
