Those neck gaitors are meant to be folded over on itself when used. I wonder if they did that in that study...I was sent a cloth mask by my healsth insurer. Holding iit up to a light showed light penatrating thru it. I have COPD and many of those masks make it difficult to breathe thru.

The device used was actually designed by the NIH and reported in the New England Journal of Medicine (https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/nejmc2007800)

The study was quite clear about the limitations, but also includes an extensive bibliography of 16 references which I suggest you may wish to read if you desire to expand your knowledge of the subject. This is by no means the only study - there have been many others by well known academic institutions. Taken as a whole, the conclusions are clear - masks can substantially reduce the spread of droplets, and there are very real differences in the effectiveness of different mask types.
I presume you have read the study in its entirety ... (show quote)

One thing I got from the study was that if we quit telling people to "stay healthy" we might all be healthier!

I saw this article just after I read the article about danger of neck gaiters and bandanas:

There is so much conflicting information out there that who knows what is actually true?

I don’t know if any experts who haven’t recommend masking up since April.

Not so much about masking up but as to which are best and do they really help as much as distancing et al...After all, the OP wasn't about masking up but the efficiency of different types...

The media has reported on a study conducted by Duke University in which they were trying to develop a low cost method of testing masks. As samples they used any masks they could find in close proximity. The Gaiter was a fleece type single layer type. The studies developer states that the results do not reveal accurate data on gaiters as testing this one was an after thought. Gaiters, when double layered, folded upon themselves can and most likely provide the same results as surgical masks. Emergency services are continuing to utilize them unless they are in proximity to patients in which case they use N-95 and protective eye wear. Don't believe all that you read and research before you answer.
