Hi Hoggers, I’m looking for a recommendation. I’m in the market for a new camera strap. I’ve always previously just used the strap provided by the manufacturer (after all, it works fine & it’s free to me). This time around, I thought I’d try a custom leather strap, at least 1.5” wide; an option to personalize would Also be nice.
Here’s a typical example of bodies & lenses in my daily carry-around for commissions shooting. I’m fairly standardized now on 5D Mk IV’s and 100-400mm L IS II USM’s (in this example an EF 1.4X III attached); so I’m looking for a very strong, wide & comfortable strap for my shoulder. Price is a secondary consideration.
I always shoot from the shoulder; either shoulder, I’m ambidextrous (or should that be ambiguous... I can ruin a shot from either left or right?). So, a basic, good quality strap is all I need; please don’t recommend harnesses, double straps, or other gimmicks. Thanks in advance.

I use this adjustable slide Strap from Peak Design.
https://www.peakdesign.com/products/slide?_pos=7&_sid=d585f5264&_ss=rIt’s very comfortable and easy to set your camera to the right position with the slide locks.
Thanks. Looks comfortable, I just wish the neck portion was backed with soft leather, rather than silicone over seatbelt webbing. Several of the reviews mentioned that the silicone leaks and stains in hot conditions.
Thanks. Pity they decided to advertise a tire manufacturer all over the strap? As I’d prefer to advertise my camera (if anything) or have a custom pattern or traditional design, I think I‘ll keep looking. I also don’t like the idea of metal connectors rubbing against my camera bodies... don’t think it would do much for the body value or looks when it’s time for the replacement cycle.
Why not just visit a leather craft store? Precut high quality leather strap, clips, buckles, etc. 15 minutes for a bare bones approach, as much as an hour for a professional looking job.

Sounds like a plan! I’ve also got a buddy in the UK in the bespoke (custom) saddlery business; I’m waiting for him to get back to me. I know he can get his hands on some of the best leather in the business.

A bit of research you could do before tasking your Mate - I have often thought of incorporating the style of Cobra Rifle Slings into a camera strap. Link
https://www.huntercompany.com/collections/cobra-slings. Position of the wide padded area would necessarily be different to support a camera / lens. Would do one for myself, but I've gone entirely to wrist straps. Fun project - who knows, you might get a lucrative sideline for him.
Op Tech straps. MTShooter turned me on to these several years ago.
Check out Gordy’s camera straps. I don’t think they make one the width you want from end to end, but they have wide pads. I use the wrist strap on my favorite boat camera, EMD-1, as well as one for ff Sony. I also have a neck strap that I very rarely use. Well made, look great and have held up great.

https://luma-labs.com/I have finally settled on one of these. High quality...US made...leather backing.
Not cheap ...but quality rarely is.

You’re right, not cheap, but not bad either, looks like quality merchandise. The only thing I didn’t like were the metal connections.
I suggest you take a look at luigicases.com. Luigi is located just outside of room and makes absolutely beautiful leather cases and camera straps. Not cheap but superb quality.

Made in Portland! One other suggestion that fails the leather test but something you might want to consider. I have the Holdfast Money Maker that lets me carry 3 cameras.
I didn't like the big screw thing in the bottom of my camera (one more thing to deal with for a triood/monopod shot). I use Really Right Stuff L brackets and they have a QD socket. I swapped out the HF stuff for QD. It let's plug the primary strap in the bottom and gives me a safety strap I plug in the lower side. They come off quickly and clean. Magpul makes straps with QD connectors which are typically used on rifles. Kirk enterprises, which by the way make some good ARCA clamps etc sell some of the straps. Might take a look.
