Okay Hedgehoggers, since I'm fairly new at this, I'm wondering whether this shot of a tree (which was shaped oddly) is good or junk. If it is good, how could I have made it better? If it's junk, why? You won't hurt my feelings, so critique away. This was taken with a Nikon D3100 and 18 - 55 mm kit lens. Thanks!

Odd is nice. Otherwise I would never have gotten married.

Good eye. Thanks

It is a different and interesting perspective. Not sure I would go so far as to hang it on my wall. It doesn't really do anything for me, maybe because there isn't really a focal point. Now maybe if there was a little squirrel sitting there in the crotch of the tree........ Or maybe get in closer and do a study on the bark and texture of the tree.

You don't hang every image you take on your wall.
I think it's something different, the exposure and focus is ok, you probably had a good reason to take it,
. If I had seen this I would have thought, that looks like one of those long necked dinosaurs. The big question is do you like it, if so keep it, if not dump it, the decision is yours. Ernie

I like the fact you are willing to put yourself out on a limb in this site. I like the attempt here very much. I think it would be more interesting to involve the lower leaves as the main subject -shooting up the tree. Keep shooting..

In my opinion it draws the eye up the tree, and I find that interesting.

The only thing I would have done is burn the tree trunk just a little.

I think often there is not enough 'black' in a photo. What I mean by that is that they look washed out or hazy. A quick fix for that is in levels (photoshop) you darken the middle slider (mid tones) or the left slider (darks). That is pretty much what I did with your photo. Hope you don't mind me posting it. You know a picture is worth a thousand words! I also cropped a bit of the bottom off.

Thank you Country's Mamma, I think you're right. Add a focal point. Thanks for your help. It's appreciated.

Thanks Wendy2. I really do have to learn Photoshop! It certainly gave the image an artsy look. I appreciate your working on it.

Thanks Pappy, by burning, do you mean making it darker? I appreciate your help. Right now every picture is a learning experience!
