If your budget allows it no question go with the 32gb.

I ponder the lengths technology has come already. I remember having 20 MEGABytes of RAM in an early PC. That was back when they had truly floppy discs. Graphics was in its infancy.

Shoot, I go back to when the I/O device was a teletype and the computer was 8 KILOBytes, and it was named a PDP8. That was used by NASA for space vehicles. We even had a very early one at work that didn't use ICs, it had individual transistors and filled a 6 foot rack.

And now 16 GigaByte isn't enough!

So true! My first computer was a TRS-80 Model 100. Portable, powered by 4 "c" cells, 8kb of ram, programs had to loaded each time you used it from a cassette player, and had a built in modem. It even had built in Basic on a rom chip.

16 is good. I built two with 32GB, but that was probably overkill. When I buy one, I get the minimum and then buy more. it's cheaper to buy aftermarket.

"Get as much as you can afford" is the best advise so far.

16-32 gig of RAM is good. Be sure to include a hefty graphics card. If you add one of the new AI programs like Topaz, I hear they’re very demanding on memory and graphics. Think "gamer machine".

32!

It is better to have ram and not need it, then go need ram and not have it!

I currently run an iMac with 32 GB. When I was at 16 GB I would see swapping to disk, which slows down operations, after jumping to 32, swapping was greatly reduced, eliminating slow downs.

Windows works the same when low on memory by swapping pages in and out of disk.

Depending on what you have loaded & active in memory, even 32 may not eliminate all swapping, you can check by tracking page ins & outs while running your applications.

Ram is important...go with 32 if you can.
16 will run LR...adequately.
Make sure you are getting a fast CPU however. Laptops notoriously can skimp in that category.
Especially with a large camera sensor...or using a program like Topaz.
That's usually the limiting factor...the CPU.

One other thing to note and someone brought up as a valid point as well. Video card, try to lean towards a dedicated video graphics card, one thing you will see on cheaper models is "integrated graphics" while they are fine for light duty for example web browsing once a load is put on it they will slow down. The integrated graphics is using part of the cpu power hence the bottle neck in performance. Keep in mind the hard drive space can always be upgrade by going externally via a usb connection.

There is more to the question than the obvious. RAM comes in different speeds which is controlled by the mother board architecture. 32 GB of 1600mz RAM may not give you increased speed over 16GB of 3200mz RAM. I got a gaming computer last December and checked with the support folks on RAM. The board I have will hold 128 GB of RAM but it came with 16 GB running at 3200mz. Based on the mother board, they told me 32 GB would speed it up but over that would be a waste of money and would not increase speed.

I use LR and PS along with Topaz DeNoise and Sharpen which bogged down my older Dell 8900. Processing speeds have been cut in half and the Topaz software runs much faster. Is it instant; that's never going to happen. The Topaz software uses AI and this requires graphics processing. Your new graphics will be the weakest link. Mine has 8 GB of graphics memory.

Spend wisely to prevent buyers remorse.

As often suggested by others: as much as you can afford and as much as your laptop can accommodate. Also Toshiba is out of the laptop business - sold to Sharp.

I would get at least 32 GB Ram. And you will need a video card with its own RAM. I am not sure how much RAM is available for a laptop video card. You will need to research this.

One way to do it is to check out some laptops made for photo processing or gaming and see what they have as options. Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme; Dell XPS 15in laptop; etc.

And I also suggest a 1 TB SSD.

Go with 16. You can always add another 16 if it is needed.

Don't assume that. Check the manual before you buy to see what the maximum supported memory will be. I didn't, and I can't go above 16GB.
