Bone Fish: There are plenty of interesting things to photograph in Mobile. Besides the downtown area and church people on a sunday morning, head out I-10 towards Alabama. Take US 98 off to the right and stop at the USS Alabama and take pictures of the planes on the ground and the ship, inside and out. If that bores you take a day and go to New Orleans. Its less than 150 miles away. Just get out and do it. You will find plenty.

I love just driving around and pulling over when there is something interesting to photograph..go on line and look up places of interest in the area..mostly I found that touristy spots don't inspire me enough..I would rather find things locally and ordinary life around you wherever you are..just take photos of anything ..an interesting mailbox ..a storefront that looks all run down ..just look at everything as still life then capture it with your camera..most of all have fun..

If memory serves correctly, the USS DRUM (submarine), and the USS ALABAMA (battleship) are both anchored there in Mobile.

<bonefish> First read your user's manual, read and set your camera to Sport Continuous Mode... Check the speed of your memory card.. Speeds are in mbs. ( 15mb, 20mbs 30mbs ect). The higher the # of mbs, the faster the READ & WRITE speed will be depending on the camera...Also to download to your computer... I hope this helps you...

Read your manual. Take loads of pictures. Then read your manual again. Now take more pictures. Pretty soon you will start to understand your csmera. Have lots of fun and happy shooting.

how about some cool angles on the USS Alabama? I can also think there could be interesting shots going into/coming out of that tunnel under water...just a couple of ideas

I had a photography teacher that quoted some one, don't remember who, but said" There is a lifetime of photos all within a mile of your own backyard". I believe this is true but I like many need our own senses stimulated and look for that special picture we strive for. Me included? My point is, sit on the porch, walk around the block, take close-ups of flowers, bugs, etc... learn your camera and its functions, limitations and you will be better prepared for anything that comes your way with a chance of capturing it!!! Good luck, and keep shooting!!!

Welcome to UHH. I would take a few of the entrance to the Bankhead Tunnel; maybe go out 98 west (Moffat Road)towards Hattiesburg and take a few pictures of Snuffy Smith's General Store; and along the way (on 98 W) there are numerous fruit stands along the sides of the road where you have already set up still lifes of fruit & vegies. See if you can take some down by the Mobile harbor of the ships and such. Halloween is coming up soon and outdoor decorations would be a challenge with their particular lighting requirements. The beaches at Dauphin Island should be beautiful this time of year, and there is the "Gardens" down that way as well.

I have not read this whole thread, however, in general try state and national parks in your area. Museums offer good challenges for photography (i.e. lighting, glare). If you have garden, that is an opportunity or visit a garden in your area. I hope this will start you thinking about places to shoot.

Shoot from Daphne across Mobile Bay at sunset. There is a resturant / bar called Bimini Bob's. Get there about an hour before sunset and set up a tripod and camera. The light changes rapidly right when the sun hits the horizon. A little cloud cover (broken clouds) really adds to the effect. Then grab a burger and a beer on the deck. Keep the camera ready for your furry friends (racoons) to show up if you sit by the rail. Signs say not to feed them but the staff does. I'll post some photos if I have time under this thread. Also Alligator Alley, Fairhope, and the downtown "French Quater" area. The USS Alabama at night with a full moon is also good. If the park is closed you can still drive in and walk a little ways across the field. If anyone asks just tell them what your doing. Friendly group so you shouldn't have a problem. I have a photo hanging in the museum there.. Tripod and long exposure.

AFTER you read your manual and know where all the controls are located AND how to use them - try Bellingrath Gardens - it is a beautiful house and gardens. If you want a variety of subjects, Bellingrath has a river, dock, large landscaped lawns, critters - rabbits, crabs, butterflies, lizards. The home is an architectural marvel. Do a Google search for Bellingrath Gardens and you will find out what flowers are in bloom and special events.

When you shoot, take your time, watch the lighting, compose your shot, and shoot.

Have fun

I'm with you and maybe in red, that would be nice. I am all for respecting both the vets and the equipment used. If anyone says ANYTHING you and I will stand together, shoulder to shoulder and ... I think I had better slow down, but you get the picture. :)
