The slate article is correct in that the authors do not define the masks carefully. Some of the masks are only tested on one person. A better study would use more people with different physical characteristics and the masks should be very carefully defined. I am confident that various manufactures with the same "type" of masks have different performance characteristics. The study does also not allow for testing the epidemiological effectiveness of masks.

Perfect observation Fetzler. No one, not even the WHO or CDC have conducted or sponsored that kind of test. The CDC still does not confirm that COVID-19 is airborne, though they continue to recommend wearing masks without valves (as reported on the news yesterday). The CDC does confirm that the virus is transferred through contact, thus the emphasis on hand washing.

Is there anything that you will believe? Or what will it take for you to believe?
Doesn't look like anyone believes in science anymore.
If 27 sources all say essentially the same thing do you need more proof?
What will you believe? Trump? God? Neither of whom are apparently going to help get us out of this virus jam.

I always wear a mask when outside the house. I'm not happy that I had to order masks from China instead of having them made here in the USA. My masks have a 3 layer replaceable filter under the tight fitting mask, ear loops to hold the mask 'up' and velcro to attach the two pieces behind my head.

One of the early posts on Covid-19, referred to research about how many particles were needed to get an infection. The answer was as little as 5 in the nasal passages.

Now, if you also read the research that, in enclosed (indoor) facilities, a cough or sneeze causes larger moisture droplets to travel 4-6 feet. But, aerosolized particles of Covid-19 can spread up to 40 feet indoors. This helps explain one of the early Covid hotspots - a church choir had 2 infected singers who spread the virus to over 30% of the rest of the singing choir.

The medical mask (N-95?), made in the USA, was in short supply for medical staff and first responders at the first of the year. Before we knew very much about Covid-19, the politicians and doctors discouraged citizens from getting these medical masks and possibly causing trouble for the medical/first responders. Now there is an oversupply. But, we never had our President use an Executive Order to have more USA facilities produce these masks so that ALL Americans could have access to the safest possible face covering.
