This happened to me once. I used two pipe wrenches and washcloths to protect the metal. I won't guarantee that it won't end badly, but it worked OK for me.

Pipe wrenches? really? I want to see that done.

Guess what! I got it! I can't believe that I could do something that fix-it guys couldn't. I little WD-40 make them come apart immediately. Now all I have to do is clean the filters! Thanks, everyone!

Cleaning the UV filter will be easy, but if the WD40 has gotten between the layers of the CPL I suspect it may be ruined.

I would never have that problem as I don't use UV filters....The only time I've had stuck filters is on used lenses I bought off of eBay.... I used filter wrenches in those cases...

Mount the filters on your lens. Using two filter wrenches ( available at B&H) attach both filters with a wrench and turn the outside filter wrench to remove that filter while holding the inside filter still with the other filter wrench.

That had been my plan. Until I tried plan B!

I tried that. Mine wasn't big enough.

Actually, the bottom lens didn't have much on it. The top one was a bit harder. Tried Goop and that sort of made it worse. A tiny dot of dish soap and a soft cloth did the trick.

I have them on all my lenses to save the lens.

AZPicLady, the next time you want to put a filter on, take your finger and rub it on the side of your nose and then rub that finger on the filter threads.
The little bit of natural oil from your nose will keep the filters from sticking together.
This is an old trick that works.

I have yet to have a lens get damaged from a lack of a "protective" filter since 1972 and I have an extensive number of lenses...That said, it's a matter of personal choice anyway...

That's sort of a common problem, with many potential solutions. Havinf the filter stuck on the lens is more common. With two filters, you don't have much to grip. Here's an idea. Get a hard surface that is grippy. Maybe put some grippy material over the surface. Then get a flat board and put a grippy surface on that. Press the board down onto the top filter and turn counterclockwise.

The trick is being able to get a good grip on both filters so you can apply enough rotational force. here's the extreme solution. Sacrifice one of the filters. Very carefully saw through the mounting ring with a hack saw. You might be able to saw partway through at several points. That will relies the tens, and let you remove the less expensive filter.

Some possible solutions -

Also try putting the stuck filters in a freezer. Maybe the temp change will "shrink" them enough to help you unscrew them. (This assumes they are not stuck on a lens. I would not put a lens in a freezer.)
