A problem only if Apple doesn't remain compatible and support the file structure.
It's the Operating System that controls how the processor handles the file I/O.

The same devices can be used by either, as long as the support is written into the Operating System.
Data movement is simply bit manipulation.

Interesting article by Dan Wells. Lots of unknowns at this point. Apple has changed processors before. How well (and if) major SW developers are able/willing to re port their code to a new CPU will define their future market share at least as much as how well the new device performs from a HW perspective. It will be interesting to see it play out...

The obvious thing is all of us working stiffs that have Apple computes at work only a few dozen million I'd guess, are able to have them due to ONE reason: the Mac will boot Windows, or run Windows under Parallels. IF that is lost, then Apple will lose the enterprise market. They have done dumber things. Remember Aperture? The Final Cut Pro fiasco? Those examples show that they don't particularly care if they lose customers. One of my joys of work is being able to use my Mac. Rue the day that I have to give it up because for those of us using Apple computers, productivity will take a dive.

I can do 10x the things in MacOS as iOS. I don't need computer that will run iOS I need an iPad that will run MacOS.

It would be interesting to see the in-house Apple marketing presentation on this transition to their sales force - they have flirted with this idea in the past. There have been some notable marketing failures in the processor space. Oracle put zillions of $ into trying to revive Sparc, only to finally cede it to Fujitsu. Motorola had major market share, only to lose it when IBM chose Intel for the PC (I heard an interesting insight on this decision from one of the original engineers in the Boca group that wrote the PC spec). MIPS is long forgotten as a mainstream professor, and IBM’s Power PC is strong in the HPC market as part of their Blue Gene Product, but has minuscule market share elsewhere. Computer history is littered with excellent RISC processors that have failed in the marketplace.

Disclaimer: Since I am 13+ years retired the opinions expressed here are more anthropological than professional.

It is my opinion that Apple corporate DNA requires development and marketing of hardware and software products that are exclusive to each other. Especially, the OS will only run on Apple HW and vice versa. They are, in effect, bundled. Besides the obvious financial benefits it makes OS development and maintenance much easier. For example, Windows is expected to handle a wide disparity of HW. An expectation that is nearly impossible to satisfy.

To that end Apple does not market to government and enterprises that require continued support of computers and OSs. And they Are not alone in not permitting use of their products in safety critical applications due to liability concerns. They are happy with their market and are willing to forgo smaller markets.

With that said I imagine Adobe will port their Photo products. MacOS is no doubt a large portion of their market for Photoshop which includes ACR. The GPL database Lightroom Classic is built with is SQLite which numbers Apple among their many users which will reduce the effort and risk of a port to a new OS.

Maybe?
