Bird identification please.
I shot this little bird at the Butterfly Rainforest at the University of Florida in Gainesville. They identify all the butterflies but not the birds.
Pretty bird. No idea what it is.
My guess is a kind of finch. Larry
? But I don't think it's a house finch, not enough red, ? I don't have a clue ? Wait for one of the forum's bird expert who will give it instant ID.
Wow - what a great resource that Picture Bird (and insect, animal, plant, etc.) is! Thanks!
JRiepe, thanks and I will check out Picture Bird.
The Red Adadavat is an Asian bird. Not likely.
From what I know after over 50 years of birding, the beak tells me it is in the finch family. The color in the beak and stripe is throwing me, I can't ID this one for sure. Might be a young Gold finch. It might be an escaped pet finch, but it is definitely in the finch family.

The Butterfly Rainforest at the University of Florida is a screened enclosure where they have exotic butterflies and birds.
It looks like a waxbill to me - a non-native bird.

Sure does. Blown off course. We have a spoonbill up here in the middle of Indiana this summer.
When I lived in a Chicago suburb on a couple occasions I, as well as my neighbor, saw some kind of tropical bird flying around that I assume was once a pet or escaped from a zoo. It landed on an electrical wire but flew away before I could grab the camera and get a shot. The avadavat is a type of finch and could have escaped from captivity.
