I never use a debit card because of the lack of protection.

Anyone who uses a debit card for anything other than getting cash from an ATM is a disaster waiting to happen. Someone gets that card or its info has access to not only the card's money but every other account associated with it. For vacations, my wife and I opened separate accounts with limited money so if a thief gets the cards, all that's available is about a $1000.

PayPal is a very convenient way to get money to someone. If that someone is a "Friend or Relative," you can select that option, and the person receiving the money doesn't pay the fee. If you use a credit card connected to your account, you pay the fee, instead, about 3%. However, if you have the money taken from your bank account, there is no fee.

Some sellers request that Friend or Relative "discount," and you have to decide if you want to do that for a stranger. If you use a credit card for a $2,000 purchase, you would be paying an additional $60.00. Something to think about.

When did that change Jerry, I've used the "Friend or Relative" option a number of times and have never been charged the 3% on my credit card, which is the default payment method.

Ah, well that makes sense. If a seller requests that method of payment, I'll add 3% to the amount I pay and use the regular method.

I only add the 3% if the buyer requests it. I'm assuming if the buyer accepts PayPal that he/she knows that the amount received will be 3% less that the amount and it's built in to the asking price.

I quit PayPal a long time ago when they refused to act on a fraud.

I go through PP and have my credit card listed as the go-to way to pay. This way I have double protection. If PP doesn't help me, I'll just file a discrepancy with my credit card provider. The absolute best way to receive funds if you are the seller is by personal check. You can hold up shipping what you are selling until the check clears (up to 14 days in some cases). Of course the buyer has to understand and agree to the delay.

J. R,

Well, I would pay a fee if I used a credit card, but I don't pay a fee if PayPal takes the money from my bank account. Maybe that counts as a debit, but that's the way I pay all my bills. I don't write checks anymore.

That's what I do with PP - pay through a CC. The alternative is to use PayPal Credit, and I don't want to do that. The complication comes in when the seller wants me to use Friends and Family to save the fee. I don't like doing that for non F&F.

Then, don't do it. If they want to sell they need to pay the fees.

I have not used checks in 20 years?

I still don't get what you are trying to say, PP can take money from any of my accounts (Bank), without me setting it up. I never use PP friends & family. I can do wire transfers which caused me in business to stop using checks.

I know of at least one other blog that advised not to use PP-FF as the blogs leverage as well as PP backing is lost.

I just really don't understand the tip you were tiring to get across. Friends & Family to ify for me.

To verify a purchase from either paypal or ebay, make sure you do a screen cap of the transaction step by step. Normally, I get a confirming email from either/both companies giving info on the order. That's all you need for follow up.

My sister and I each had the same thing happen. It's a scam. PayPal denied my claim, then denied my appeal. My CC company took care of it for me. Mine showed delivered to an address in Puerto Rico. I'm in the US

I never have had a problem with them.
Formerly I paid via a credit card, but now I just get the money from them and they bill me monthly.

I hadn't either. Both these incidents happened in the last 3 months. I bought 5 horses from a kill pen in Louisiana 5 years ago. Paid via PayPal as that was the only option offered. They suggested everyone use Friends & Family, which I did. During transport to CA I got a call from one mares supposed previous owner that she had been sold, the buyer didn't finish paying for her, sold her to the kill pen, then I bought her. He wanted $500 for her papers. I didn't want to get caught in a stolen property situation so sent the money without using F&F. Never got the papers and I was able to dispute it and got my money back. I also got quite a few threatening messages from the kill pen that I stole that $500 back from them. Be careful out there!

Using Friend/family discount for a stranger on PayPal is fraudulent as they are trying to avoid the fee.
