Every year this building is decorated with twelve different colors or shades of corn. The cost is around $130,000. This must require a huge amount ot time and talent.

I stumbled across this place in August of 1978! I was 23, taking a solo summer camping/photography trip around the USA. The Corn Palace had a corn picture of Red Skelton on the facade. It looked like an interesting museum, so I wandered in.

They were showing a multi-image presentation about prairie life. The show was mildly interesting, but more interesting was the technology behind it — computer-controlled slide projectors, driven by cues on audio tape. It was the third such show I'd seen, and the one that triggered my strong desire to produce them. I had been a photographer most of my life to that point, had worked in radio for six years, and I'm a writer, so it would be a natural fit.

Less than a year later, I was working for a yearbook/school portrait company, where I spent my first 8 years as an AV production supervisor, producing sound-filmstrips for training, slide-tape presentations for training, and large, multi-screen multi-image presentations for sales meetings and editors' workshops. I had a 33 year career there, in nine different roles...

So the Corn Palace holds a special place in my heart!

Nice images and thanks for taking me back to when I was there some 30 years ago. It is quite a display of craftsmanship and local pride.

Oh my god JR , that is spectacular. I had no idea that this occurs in S. Dakota and it is truly a special treasure for sure. Thanks so much for showing us this magical event and it's location. I'm a fan now....yep.

Saw that building back in l963 and I was flying a cropduster from Cando, ND to Olney, Texas. If anyone is ever in the area, it will be worth their time to go by and see it. Very interesting.

It's one of the better oddities I've encountered in my travels. Pretty amazing, actually!

Fifty miles from me. It is fun to see what they come up with every year for the decorations. Every year we have to hope for a good crop in the special fields where the different kinds of corn grow.We Dakotans are proud of our Corn Palace.
