Im old school, and now finding my iPhone captures better quality images than my 35mm. Nikon D-300
Anyone know of any 35mm. that matches, using HD?
When I say old school, I used the Crown Graphic 4x5 slide film holder as a run and gun news photographer., moved up to the 35mm. WOW! 36 frames. Always a great challenge to capture that one shot that would tell the story.
Now I see these today using a motor drive when taking a still shot, or video, then pulling the one frame they want.
Now, that's what I call real talent, thank you.
I mean no disrespect, you had to be there to understand.
Welcome any sugjestions.
Thank you

Know nothing about phones, or your budget - a good bit about "Old School". If you can afford a new DF, or find a good used one, I believe you'll feel right at home.

Edit: I don't do video, neither does the DF, so if video is what you're looking for, disregard my comment!

I may be missing something here, but I equate 'HD' to Hi-Def, as in video capture. So far as a ff Nikon that ain't too shabby, and won't break the bank, there are a ton of D610's around for pretty cheap. Not quite the same as shooting with a 4x5 of any ilk, but digital isn't film, and film isn't digital. And apart from that, unless all you do is little 435 Kb FaceBlook image posts (read that: you want to print something, and you want to print it big), any of the current (or slightly past current) ff digital cameras that are available will blow the sox off the best iPhone that exists.

Oh, BTW. I have a really nice D610 (low-ish shutter count, US model, bought new by me) I hardly ever use any more, ever since I got a D810. I could even toss in a "nifty-50" and you'd still be pretty blown away.

It's hard to understand what specific feature / capability you're asking about as "HD" for some is low-resolution for others...

For example, the Canon EOS R5 records in 8k ultra high definition - UHD video, not a feature of any of the Nikon offerings. Is that "HD" enough for you?

Or, do you mean high resolution, such as the Nikon D850 that captures 4k video and 45MP stills?

I'm a little bit confused what you are asking. My D300 does not shoot video. D300s does video, but pretty limited by today's standards. Can't remember if it even would do 720p.

In general, video capability of Nikon's DSLRs has progressed with time, and it still varies from model to model, with higher level cameras offering more resolution and higher frame rates. The D500 and the D850, which use XQD cards, both offer resolution and frame rate combinations not availaable on other of their DSLRs, and the D850 offers choices not available on the D500. Please note that I cannot speak about the Z cameras, except to say that the rules around them seem to be different.

If you are instead asking about resolution for normal still photography, the norm for both DX and full frame Nikons has been 24 MP for quite a while. Older cameras tended to be less, as you know. Your D300 is 12 MP. There are a number of exceptions. The D500 is a hair under 21 MP, and the D850 is not quite 46. The D810 was just a little over 36 MP.

I('m not where I can calculate exactly, but a frame capture from a 4K video is not going to match a still from your D300. And...video uses longer shutter speeds in just about every situation, so you are not going to have anything like the same capability to stop motion.

Please give us a little clarification so that we can give you a better answer.

The DF does NOT do video.

If HD video that you're talking about the Nikon Z5 can do full width 1080p. The Z6 can do full width 1080p as well as UHD 2160 full width. Both have full frame sensor but when doing video that is in 16:9 aspect ratio top and bottom are crop. The width is full.

"HD" is 1080P, which has become low-res compared to 4K, and even 8K, which the high end cameras are offering now. The D850 will shoot 4K video using the whole sensor at 30fps; each frame rendering around 8.5mb. If HD (1080P) is what you want, the D850 will shoot 120fps using the whole sensor, but each frame will be down to around 2mb. If HD (1080P, 2mb frames) is all you want, the D750 will do that, but at 30fps, (not 120fps.) For 4K FF video, you will spend 3x++ the price.

A new Nikon D610 with battery grip and 50 mm lens and other accessories under $900.00 is a great buy. Check out B&H. Not 4K video but still a great full frame camera.

Nikon Z6 link with all the specifications; its on special pricing and you can upgrade firmware to ProRes RAW video for about $200. if you are into filmmaking.

I get the sense that the OP is a little confused about terminology. I don’t think he means video but higher resolution photos. I also am not sure he really wants full frame because he probably has DX lenses. If he actually does want full frame the the highest resolution would be the Z7 or the D850. If video IS important then the Z6, which still doubles the resolution of the D300, if not for video the Z5. But if he really doesn’t need FF I’d go with a Z50.
