Use Sandisk exclusively, never had a failure. Am I just lucky?

Not at all.
I have never had a failure either with SD media;
I have used several brands, including Lexar.

Why a big red X? Why not just trash can it?

If you’re certain there’s just BIFs, sunsets, orchids and such on it then you can just schidtkann it. But if there’s people then it requires a decent grieving period and a suitable send off. Every photograph steals a little piece of their soul, and so a bit of respect is due.

OTOH beats me why the “X” hasta be red.

I'd make a few changes:

1) Don't 'overpay' for technology you don't need. Your D810 can't write as fast as this 250 MB/s card. Look for your next card in the 80 to 120 MB/s range.

2) Change to SanDisk cards.

I agree with both your recommendations, however this card can't write at 250MB/s either. The advertised speed on SD cards is almost always the read speed, with the write speed often about half that value. Lexar claims 120MB/s write speed for this card, which is still probably overkill.

I use Sandisk only. Never a card failure in 15 years. Usually 16gb Ultra or Ultra Plus. I shoot JPEG Fine. 16 gb is more than enough for a day’s shooting.

You must not have purchased any CFast cards in the past 4 years...not cheap...

Cards are pretty cheap nowadays, even big ones. I would no more trust a (once) bad card for important photos than I would ancient film. If you kept the receipt and package guarantee, you might have a chance of replacement. Personally, I wouldn't be likely to bother.

Where do we meet? What time?

Can we pretend we killed his dog and just burn his house down?

Or wait, can we let him keep his house, and brand the outside of it with an image of a bad disk?

Look into Delkin cards as well. They have a lifetime guarantee.

After downloading your files, format the card like 3 times. The card has corruption on it and reformatting cards helps with that.

I have had two SanDisk SD cards go bad on me over the years. The first one granted an older card in the middle of a shot. The camera told me to format the card. When I got home I tried downloading to LR. Natta. The second one was a couple of weeks ago. I went to put it into my computer. Would not slide in. When I looked at the card one of the plastic arms that separates the contact points was sticking up. It had separated from the card. Not sure if I caused the problem or not. In any case I was lucky enough to hold it down slide it in and download my images. I immediately ordered four more SanDisk extreme pro cards.
These cards are not expensive and as with Murphy’s law stuff happens. With that said I still manage to get through life.

Having used a great variety of CF and SD cards, the ONLY ones with which I’ve never had any problems is the SanDisk Extreme Pro. Size is up to you. IMO, 32gb is adequate for JPG, and 64gb for RAW. (I still like to spread the risk, rather than have one super large capacity card.)

I'm shooting and suddenly I get a BAD CARD alert on my Nikon D810. ......... Do you suppose the seller will replace the cards???

Check for firmware updates for your camera. Put a fully charged battery in. Format the card a couple times in your camera and go out and do some testing to see if the error occurs again. Include some high frame rate shooting. I have had intermittent errors before and they didn't repeat. Could be a one-off anomaly. If not, then use the lifetime warranty as others have mentioned.
